Chris_B Posted 20 November , 2005 Share Posted 20 November , 2005 I'm interested in a casualty in the Lincolns which occured on the first day of the Kaiserschlact. I only know the basic details of which Brigade/Division the 1st Lincolns were in at this time, and roughly their dispositions. Any details of events from history/war diary would be most appreciated. The man is named on a local war memorial: Name: ROLFE, CHARLES SAMUEL Initials: C S Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Private Regiment: Lincolnshire Regiment Unit Text: 1st Bn. Age: 23 Date of Death: 21/03/1918 Service No: 41360 Additional information: Son of George Henry and Maud Rolfe; husband of Cecil Maude Rolfe, of 45, Milton Rd., Wimbledon, London. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: Panel 23 and 24. Cemetery: POZIERES MEMORIAL With thanks, Chris.

Chris_B Posted 21 November , 2005 Author Share Posted 21 November , 2005 Doug, Thanks very much for posting the scans of the relevant pages of the history of the Lincolnshires, is a good clear explanation of rather chaotic times. The battalion only gets the briefest of mentions in the "Kaiser's Battle", and the maps are darn sight better in the history. I wonder if you saw my other post about a casualty in the 7th Lincolns on the 23rd March 1918. From his CWGC entry, he could well have died fighting having taken over an MG or acting as part of an MG team, the 17th being the Lincolns Division. Name: BALL, ALFRED VICTOR Initials: A V Nationality: United Kingdom Rank: Private Regiment: Lincolnshire Regiment Unit Text: 7th Bn. Secondary Regiment: Machine Gun Corps (Infantry) Secondary Unit Text: attd. 17th Bn. Age: 19 Date of Death: 23/03/1918 Service No: 42809 Additional information: Son of Mr. and Mrs. A. V. Ball, of Mill House, Barnston, Dunmow, Essex. Casualty Type: Commonwealth War Dead Grave/Memorial Reference: Bay 3 and 4. Cemetery: ARRAS MEMORIAL Your scans come tatilisingly close to, but don't quite cover the 23rd. Many thanks, Chris.
