William Stevenson Posted 20 November , 2005 Share Posted 20 November , 2005 This may be of interest to you. Last year, I as the then Chairman of Cowie Community Council (Stirlingshire Scotland) was asked to lay a wreath at the war memorial in our neighbouring village of Plean. At the community council meeting when I announced that I had been asked to lay the wreath, a question was raised as to why Cowie didn't have it's own war memorial. It was agreed that two of us would look into this. We started our research last November in Stirling Council Archives going through old newspapers from 1914-1946. To let you understand we didn't have a single name and we were researching blind looking for any reference to the village of Cowie in the death notices and war reports from the Stirling Observer (local paper). Reports such as "Cowie footballer killed in action" "Cowie Artilleryman falls in action" etc. After months of research in the archives twice sometimes three times a week, which we have just completed, we found 17 from WW1 and 26 from WW2. We were also assisted by The Argyle And Sutherland Highlander's Museum in Stirling Castle. We feel there may be more from WW1 but that is all we have found, we will advertise in the local paper for anyone with any information of relatives etc. who died to come forward and any help with this will be appreciated. We then applied for funding to erect a memorial to the fallen from Cowie and have been successful in securing the funds. This has been a very rewarding project carried out during the 60th. Anniversary Year of the end of The Second World War and also while some survivors are still with us. Very soon the village of Cowie will be able to pay their respects to the Lads who made the ultimate sacrifice for them, at their own war memorial to be erected in a memorial garden created in the centre of the village. We would be grateful to receive any information from people who believe they may know of anyone from Cowie who was killed during the wars. We will add this to our data base. We would also be grateful for any information about them so it can be recorded in a book that will be used to document the memorial.
Andrew Hesketh Posted 20 November , 2005 Share Posted 20 November , 2005 This is a very worthy cause and I think you will get huge backing from members of this forum. As a first step it may be worth posting a list of names that you already have. Have you come across a CD called 'Soldiers Died in the Great War'? If not, any one of a number of us could provide you with details from that.

Not because they have no cenotaph (they have 2) But between the 2 cenotaphs they only hold 1 in 10 of those who died in the town named on the cenotaphs (no names at all for WW2) I started a website and got a lot of names that way (actually the sites down at the moment through me sponsor - a local punk group by the way - canny lads- mistakenly not paying the bill) The Soldiers who Died CD is a good source I will send you mine If you want it (I can borrow others) so just email me Anyhow after fighting me local councillors and MP for years best I could achieve was a Memorial book of all names in the Town Hall I might add I was let down by our local British Legion who never replied to one of my letters and never helped in any way but thats another story

But I must add, a year I thoroughly enjoyed. I would appreciate everything you've found on Cowie. Cowie is a purpose built Mining Village that only started in 1895 when they sank the first shaft. So very few would be born in the village that would be old enough to serve. Many came from other mining areas to work in the pit. Can I have a look at the names who signed on in Cowie? Thank you for all the info. Willie.
Malcolm Posted 20 November , 2005 Share Posted 20 November , 2005 Don't forget any buried in the local Churchyard as they are resident for around 90 years. You have plenty of names to make a Memorial now. It may also be reasonable to enter the names at www.snwm.org to see any other information such as wills. eg. Surname MURRAY Firstname Walter Service Number S/15655 Date Death 09/04/1917 Decoration Place of birth Cowie Stirlingshire Other 10th Bn. SNWM roll THE ARGYLL AND SUTHERLAND HIGHLANDERS Rank Pte Theatre of death F.& F. or email Col Shepherd and ask him for Cowie personnel on the Memorial. Good luck and keep us posted. nemesis Posted 6 September , 2014 Share Posted 6 September , 2014 I am researching a soldier called David Forsyth of the Black Watch who won the MM and bar ,he was also awarded a solid gold medal from the Citizens of Cowie. He married the wife of a Private Yeardley who is on the Cowie war memorial. Has anyone heard of David Forsyth ? I believe that he was a Cowie man Thanks for reading this Max
