Alan Seymour Posted 16 August , 2003 Share Posted 16 August , 2003 There's no Pte. Fred Freemantle, 5th Hants, listed in the National Roll of Honour of the Great War for Southampton. Out of interest there are six FREEMANTLE's listed in Vol. IV, Southampton & two in Vol. X, Porstmouth - seven of these served on the sea in the R.N. or R.M.L.I and the other one on War munitions work. Six in the Southampton & two in the Porstmouth sections of the work. SOUTHAMPTON Section IV - page 140 FREEMANTLE, A., Steward, Merchant Service, He volunteered in 1915, and served in several Hospital and Transport ships on the high seas. These vessels were engaged in conveying wounded home from different parts, and later in transporting troops and supplies to various theatres of war, including France, East Africa, and Salonika. He rendered valuable services and in 1920 was still at sea, holding the Mercantile Marine War Medal and General Service Medal. 33, Northumberland Road, Southampton. 2192A FREEMANTLE, A. E., 1st Class Stoker, R.N. He was serving at the commencement of hostilities in August 1914, and immediately proceeded to sea with H.M.S. “Hindustan.” He was engaged on important duties with the Grand Fleet in the North Sea, and also on escorting troopships and munitions and food transports in the Mediterranean. He received his discharge in August 1919, and holds the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals. 1, Victoria Buildings, Newtown, Bishop's Waltham, Hants. X2190 FREEMANTLE, F., Torpedo Instructor, R.N. He was in the Navy at the outbreak of hostilities, and during the war was engaged in H.M. Ships “Sparrow Hawk” and “Medina.” He took part in the Battle of Jutland, on board H.M.S. “Sparrow Hawk,” which vessel was torpedoed during the engagement. Later he served in H.M.S. “Median,” and saw much activity in the North Sea and in other waters. He received his discharge in August 1919, and holds the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medal. 40, Northumberland Road, Southampton. 2191 FREEMANTLE, G. (Sen.), Special War Worker. For the duration of war he was employed by the L. and S.W.R. Company on special work for the Government in connection with the transport of munitions of war. He was exempted from Military Service owing to the importance of his work, and carried out his duties in a most efficient manner. 33, Northumberland Road, Southhampton. 2192B FREEMANTLE, P. J., Private, R.M.L.I. He volunteered in August 1915, and served in H.M. Monitor “Glory” in the North Sea, at the Dardanelles, and in Egypt. He ship was chiefly engaged on Patrol duties, and he rendered valuable services during his four years at sea. He was discharged in August 1918, and holds the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals. 49, Somerset Road, Porstwood, Southampton. X2194B FREEMANTLE, W. E., Gunner, R.M.L.I. He joined in November 1917, and served in H.M.S. “Canterbury,” and H.M. Monitor “23.” On patrol duties in many waters. These vessels patrolled the coast of France, Egypt, and the West Indies and later he saw much service in Russia where he took part in the operations at Archangel. In 1920 he was still serving and holds the General Service and Victory Medals. 49, Somerset Road, Porstwood, Southampton. X2194A PORTSMOUTH Section X – Part I page 82 FREEMANTLE, C. W., Private, R.M.L.I. He enlisted in November 1912, and during the war served on board H.M.S. "Black Prince" and "Virginian." His ship was chiefly engaged on the escorting of troopships from America and Canada, but he also served in the North Sea whilst on board H.M.S. “Black Prince.” In 1920 he was stationed in Scotland, and holds the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals. 38, Baker Street, Portsmouth. Z2311 PORTSMOUTH Section X – Part II page 299 FREEMANTLE, A. W., Stoker Petty Officer, R.N. He joined the navy in August 1899, and in August, 1914 proceeded to the North Sea in H.M.S "Castor." His ship did valuable patrol work there and took part in the Battle of Heligoland Blight and Jutland. In 1917 he was transferred to the Dover Patrol, and in April of the following year was in action in the raid on Zeebrugge, and the destruction of the Mole. He holds the 1914-15 Star, General Service Victory, and Long Service and Good Conduct Medals, and in 1920 was serving in H.M.S. “Himalaya” 73, Chasewater Avenue, Copnor.
