Wickham30 Posted 18 November , 2005 Share Posted 18 November , 2005 My first post. Quite an impressive forum this one, so a little nervous how to begin! But I’m quite interested in family/military history & am chasing quite a few unsolved mysteries from WW1, so here goes…. Attached is a mystery photo of a suspected near relation, but need a few more clues to work on. His cap badge is a bit small to see in the image, but a militaria dealer was sure it was the Middlesex regt. Anyone else agree? But what exactly was his rank? He has a single stripe on each of his upper arms, and a triple stripe on his lower left arm. I have one other photo of him sat with a family group. Be grateful for any more info Wickham
CROONAERT Posted 18 November , 2005 Share Posted 18 November , 2005 He's a Lance Corporal. (The three stripes on his lower arm are "good conduct badges" or chevrons indicating 12 years good conduct (or "undetected crime"!)). Though difficult to see, the capbadge does, indeed, look like the Middlesex Regt. He's also wearing the "simplified" SD jacket which dates this photo as probably 1915 (at the earliest) or 1916. Dave. Paul Reed Posted 18 November , 2005 Share Posted 18 November , 2005 He also looks like he is wearing the ribbon of the Queen's South Africa medal for Boer War service; he has three Good Conduct chevrons on the left sleeve, and a trade badge above them - possibly a marksmans badge. Can you blow up that bit a little more on your scanner?
Wickham30 Posted 18 November , 2005 Author Share Posted 18 November , 2005 Thanks very much both Paul & Dave. This really is a great website! Your info given so far is v.interesting: much more than I already thought possible. I've attempted to give another attach (below) which hopefully will reveal more detail from this soldier' "sleeves". It's two scans stitched together as a panorama. Hope your both still around to pick up any more thoughts. My original pic (above) was found a couple of years ago with some other family shots. Nothing written on the reverse. The soldier looks very much like one of three possible brothers to one of my great grandfathers. We think it likely that he's a relative. I've been looking through the medal indexes for similar names etc., but with no success so far. The family were all based in Bristol.
Paul Reed Posted 18 November , 2005 Share Posted 18 November , 2005 That is certainly a Marksmans badge - thanks for enlarging the image.
