182 CEF Posted 18 November , 2005 Share Posted 18 November , 2005 My home town of Whitby is the Lacrosse town in Canada..Lacrosse not Hockey is the Canadian National sport..most Canadians don't know that. Pierre Nortje from South Africa was hunting on a large Boer War Military Camp site..he and friends, found 2 differant styles of Lacrosse belt buckles..now the British don't play the game..and he knows thats the only sport I follow. Canadian Troops were also stationed at this camp..so he very kindly sent me one of the buckles..I carried it at the Rememberance Day Service at Camp X this year..The buckle arrived a couple of days before Rememberance Day..and this year in Canada it is the Year Of The Veteran. So I could not think of a better thing to take with me...This buckle has traveled 1000s of miles and has been lost for over 100 years ( the War was fought 1899-1902) It was nice to have it "Home"...Someone told the local paper about it so they contacted me and came over today for the story and photos. This is a non-military dug relic..but it will site as the center piece in my dug Canadian Military relic case. Thanks Pierre !!!!!! BeppoSapone Posted 18 November , 2005 Share Posted 18 November , 2005 Dean So, what does a Lacrosse belt buckle look like?
182 CEF Posted 18 November , 2005 Author Share Posted 18 November , 2005 Along the top there are 2 crossed Lacrosse sticks, in the Center there are 2 guys with sticks about to play with the ball on the ground. On either side there are pennents on poles. The buckle is just over 2.5 inches long and 1.5 inches wide..however there is a bit missing along the bottom..I think it was another pair of crossed Lacrosse sticks ( crossed on a long angle so they run the length of the buckle). The other buckle was very differant...I saw a photo of it last year..it had "LA" on one side and "CROSS" on the other..This one is made of brass..I will try to get a photo of it and post it..gotta find a friend with a camera!!! marc leroux Posted 18 November , 2005 Share Posted 18 November , 2005 Lacrosse not Hockey is the Canadian National sport As clarification, in 1994 the Canadian Parliament made lacrosse Canada’s National Summer Sport and hockey Canada’s National Winter Sport. Prior to 1994 Lacross was the National Sport. marc
182 CEF Posted 18 November , 2005 Author Share Posted 18 November , 2005 Marc..that is correct..however I don't watch hockey just Lacrosse. At least the palyers arn't over paid like most sports..and they play their hearts out. I was at the first 2 Championship games the Toronto Rock won..Their 1st 2 seasons they played!!!... Any sport where you can hit your opponant with a big stick..and he isn't wearing tons of padding is a Great sport!!!! Dean
HERITAGE PLUS Posted 18 November , 2005 Share Posted 18 November , 2005 Lacrosse is played in the UK although only as a'minority' sport. I've watched my neice play at regional representative level she changed from and aimable and pleasant young lady to a viscious banshee once she stepped on the pitch!!!
