KONDOA Posted 17 November , 2005 Share Posted 17 November , 2005 Evening Chums, Just wondered if any pal had a stash of photos of this particular gun. They seem a little scarce so far as I can determine. Particularly interested in the purpose built gun platforms for same which were supplied with the gun. Best efforts please chaps. KONDOA Posted 19 November , 2005 Author Share Posted 19 November , 2005 Threads seem to disappear quickly recently so raising this one to the top for a retry. Roop

KONDOA Posted 19 November , 2005 Author Share Posted 19 November , 2005 Thats a fine picture Robert, looks like an early model by the type of recuperator?? My interest in these weapons is that my GF's battery (545SB)were so armed with Holt tractors to pull them. I must have another bash at the IWM now I know what I am looking for. 6th Hauraki KIA KAHA Posted 20 November , 2005 Share Posted 20 November , 2005 Hi thought you might find this of interest , I do not think it is the same type of gun?. but is this the tractor you have mentioned? Two photos taken by A New Zealander in the Rifle Brigade, from a photo Album I have. Cheers Jonathan.
KONDOA Posted 20 November , 2005 Author Share Posted 20 November , 2005 Yes Jonathan that is one version of the Holt tractor (later CAT: Caterpiller). The guns in this case are Mk VII or VIII 8" Howitzers. Thanks for that. Roop

KONDOA Posted 22 November , 2005 Author Share Posted 22 November , 2005 Thats another nice picture Ian, I would suspect the battery could be ID'd with a bit of research. Thanks for posting it. Roop
ian turner Posted 22 November , 2005 Share Posted 22 November , 2005 Roop, Do you know what? I think that Robert's pic (post no. 5) is the same gun (or outside the same building) as the far gun in my pic! I think it is the same building. My suspicion is that the tiles have been brought down by the percussion of the guns firing, as the buildings look otherwise undamaged. I also think that the near gun (in my posted view) has just fired. You can still see a puff of smoke in the top right-hand corner, and the tread on the nearest wheel is blurred, as if it is moving from recoil. If I am right, then the group of squaddies looking on from the doorway are in danger of having a heap of tiles land on their heads! The more you look, the more you see.... Spooky coincidence, and well done for spotting it!
KONDOA Posted 23 November , 2005 Author Share Posted 23 November , 2005 By George you are right, well spotted that man!! These guns are the early version , the later version shown in Johns pic had a different recuperator. Neither picture shows the firing platform which was supplied with the later version and allowed a 30 degree lateral field of fire to be enabled without relaying or moving the gun. The gun carriage in both cases is a modified 8" frame. The gun nearest the camera would appear to be at full recoil having just fired. Thanks again, ace stuff.
