siquisiri Posted 17 November , 2005 Share Posted 17 November , 2005 Companeros, I am interested in obtaining a 1886 lebel bayonet but need some help. Although I have read that the 1886 Lebe Bayonet was used through both world wars is there a way to distinguish an 1886 lebel bayonet used during the Great War from one used during WWII? thanks francisco
CROONAERT Posted 17 November , 2005 Share Posted 17 November , 2005 Although I have read that the 1886 Lebe Bayonet was used through both world wars is there a way to distinguish an 1886 lebel bayonet used during the Great War from one used during WWII? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Not really. The WW2 bayonets were probably of WW1 manufacture anyway and were simply re-issued. If you want the 1886 bayonet though, make sure that it has the "German Silver" handle and a quillion. This bayonet was simplified in 1915 and became the "M1915" (or was it the "M1886/15"?) by having a brass handle and no quillion. The majority of later issues (ie.WW2) were of the 1915 variety. They should be manufacture dated anyway. Dave.

gew98 Posted 18 November , 2005 Share Posted 18 November , 2005 They should be manufacture dated anyway. Dave. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Dave ; actually the french '86 Epee' bayonets for the lebel were never date or maker marked. They simply had serial numbered scabbards to match the serial placed on the crossguard/quillion. Some epee' bayonets had their quillions removed during and after the war, as well the french after WW1 shortened many for reissue with the Mle 86/93 R35 and Mle16 'carbines'. trajan Posted 14 March , 2012 Share Posted 14 March , 2012 ... the french '86 Epee' bayonets for the lebel were never date or maker marked. They simply had serial numbered scabbards to match the serial placed on the crossguard/quillion. It is amazing what a simple Google search brings up! In my case, searching for more information on Lebel bayonets brings up this one from 2005! Ok, yes, Lebel's were never date marked, but I think I read somewhere that the letter before the serial number indicates the factory where the bayonet was made? E.g., an 'E' is for Etienne? Is that right? Trajan PS: - Oh, I'm happy to go into a French website if necessary, so long as I don't have to compose a query or reply in the language! PPS: MODS. just saw that this is in miscellaneous - can it be shunted to arms? TIA!
auchonvillerssomme Posted 14 March , 2012 Share Posted 14 March , 2012 See if you can find a copy of 'Les Baionnettes Reglementaires Francaises de 1840 a 1918'. It is in French but relatively easy to translate.
MikeS0000 Posted 15 March , 2012 Share Posted 15 March , 2012 Not really well known, but If you find one with no markings at all, still in the long blade configuration, it is likely a Remington made example. Best regards! - Mike

Forgot to say 'Thanks'! Tried googling but I can't find an ISBN, so I can't request it through ILLoan, but there seem to be plenty copies around on French and other e-bay. auchonvillerssomme Posted 20 March , 2012 Share Posted 20 March , 2012 I think I got my copy from the Historial (don't you just hate that word?) in Peronne.
trajan Posted 20 March , 2012 Share Posted 20 March , 2012 .. from the Historial (don't you just hate that word?) ... Thanks, and yes.... AAAAggggh, that goes in the 'no' catalogue along with 'Touristical' and the like... I'll try to order this one through France - my French is only reading standard and very work oriented (currently reading, as a review editor, an incredibly long-winded tome on Roman Imperial Art in Syria... ), so I'll get my Francophone colleagues to do this - no way I can formulate an order in French for a book on bayonets... BTW, any thoughts on two other French books I have seen references to? Namely 'Les Baïonettes de la Guerre 14-18', and 'Les Baïonnette Militaires Françaises'? Şerefe!
