DrB Posted 16 November , 2005 Share Posted 16 November , 2005 Three questions: #1: Were the collars and cap badges the same size for the Medical Corps, both UK and Commonwealth? #2: Did the title "Royal" (given post war) cause the addition of "R" to be placed in front of A.M.C? This is for the commonwealth units. #3: Did the removal of the crown from the South African Artillery, Ordnance Corps, et al badges signify when the country left the Commonwealth? Thanks in advance. Graham Stewart Posted 17 November , 2005 Share Posted 17 November , 2005 DrB In the case of RAMC cap and collar badges, you will find that the O/R's only wore them in orders of dress, other than service dress and that the cap badge was larger than the collars. It's not until after the war that you see the introduction of collar badges on O/R's SD uniforms. Officers bronze cap and collar badges do appear to be around the same size. The title R.A.M.C. was actually a pre-war title, not post war, but off the top of my head I can't remember when it was introduced. If I remember rightly the unit didn't exist prior to the South African War and so would say it was a post-S.A. War formation. The Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps was formed on the 2nd July 1904. The South African Medical Corps cap badge was introduced in 1922 in brass and then in 1923 a blackened badge was adopted, but not the title "Royal". I would think on leaving the commonwealth all trace of "Royal" embelishment would have been removed from S.A. badges as it became a Republic. Graham. Grovetown Posted 17 November , 2005 Share Posted 17 November , 2005 The R of RAMC was acquired in 1898. Best wishes, Grovetown.
