Lancs Fusiliers 1915

My great uncle was a Private with the Lancs Fus (no Battalion given). His medal cards state he received theVictory & British medals, 15 Star (2B) and SWB (2B). He entered ToW 24.8.15.

A cousin says he had frostbitten toes, which he lost, and returned home about 1916. She also seems to think this was at Gallipoli. Does this make sense re the medal card details?

Beverley

It might be clearer if you could scan and post the MIC, but I can say that Operational Thatre of War 2B was "Gallipoli (Dardanelles)"

Hi Beverley,

My grandfather was also Lancashire Fusiliers and went to Gallipoli with the 9th Battalion. If you are able to provide his details including regimental number I will see what I can dig up.

Beverley,

Bloody hell I have goose bumps!! My grandfather was 24068 Pte Albert G Dawe. I have actually downloaded Crawford's MIC before to see if it would provide any clues in respect to my grandfather's service.

I would guess your great uncle was transferred as a reinforcement, likely from a cavalry unit, to the 9th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers. The battalion participated in the Suvla landings in early August and were very badly cut up. By the 21st August 1915 they only had about 100 men left. The battalion then combined with the 8th Northumberland Fusiliers (also badly cut up) to form a composite battalion until sufficient reinforcements were received to re-raise both units. The battalion did not compile a war diary for this period.

My grandfather's MIC entry date is 12th September 1915. He initially joined the battalion as a reinforcement from the cavalry (5th Dragoon Guards) and served with them until the battalion was disbanded in February 1918, later joining the 1/5th Battalion. He did not see war service with the cavalry. I have researched men with similar numbers to my grandfather and most in that number block appear to have formerly been cavalry men who joined the 9th Bn as reinforcements following Suvla. I would guess your relative's circumstances were similar.

Hi Tim,

Spooky!!! Many thanks for the info, very interesting.

Arthur enlisted in 1914 and I have a photo of him in uniform taken at that time. Would that tell you anything further - probably not. I also have a pic of him when he was convalescing in Scotland with a group of other men.

My cousin (she was close to him as they lived nearby in Derby, where he came from and lived all his life) tells me that he said if it hadn't been for his friend who carried him to the rescue boat (couldn't walk due to his toes) he wouldn't have got away. So this friend saved his life.

All the best, Beverley

Hi Beverely,

Can you post scans of the photographs you have? I am sure we can tell you more. I misprinted the number too...my grandfathers was 24068...not 86. Still very close though!!
