Has anyone come across the name Oxtoby in their research..?

My grandfather was Thomas Oxtoby from Warter in East Yorkshire.

There are 78 Oxtoby's on the MIC's

2 in the Registers of Seamen's Services

Any info would be good. I beleve Tom drove steam waggons in WW1 so he may have served in the ASC.

Regards

Steve

Hi Ian

John Thomas Oxtoby, Private 1436 (later 240198) 'A' Company 1/5th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment (TF).

J.T. Oxtoby was probably born in Hull.

Prior to the war he was a Railway Engine Cleaner.

He enlisted at Grimsby.

At some time he lived at 59 Orwell Street Grimsby.

On 19th April 1915 he received shrapnel wounds near to Newport Dug-outs just behind the front line communication trenches when the Lincolns were in the Kemmel sector opposite 'Spanbroekmolen' (Messines/Wytshaete Ridge, Belgium)

J.T. Oxtoby survived the war. He was present with his wife, at the funeral in 1919 of his friend, Tom Bluette. Bluette was wounded on May 10th 1915. He died as a result of these wounds and was at one time a journalist with the Grimsby News.

Is this man possibly related?

Regards,

Steve.

Thanks very much for the info...

Thomas Oxtoby, born: 1887 in Warter and living in Millington in 1881 is my grandfather. What I am really after is tracing his military service in WW1 (I am also interested in any othe Oxtoby's military service...)

I have no medals or real clue as to where he served apart from the steam waggon driver family story. This is supported by the fact that he later got a job as a steam road roller driver with the West Riding council.

Otoby service papers were in the burnt cos at the records office, so it looks like I have a long search on my hands...

Thanks again

Steve

Thanks Charles,

I have seen this man and he may well be related to Tom, I have seen the memorial in Filey with his name on.

My best guess is that this is my grandfather as he was always know as Tom, not Thomas so he may have used Tom when he joined up.

Tom Oxtoby - Driver T4/161134 Army Service Corps.

I would like to find more info re the ASC unit he was in. I beleive this was raised in Eats Yorks in or around Pocklington.
