aramsay Posted 13 November , 2005 Share Posted 13 November , 2005 I have just recently found what looks like a Hood Batt. service record of some sort for my great uncle George Lawrie, but can't remember where it came from, or what all the reference numbers mean.......... I would like to know if someone recognises the format of this document, and where it would have come from and where is the original likely to be ? Does it signify his service records survived the infamous blitz bombing ?? Also, what do all the references; "D.0.235", "AFB.2090a", "AFB.1023", etc. mean ? Appreciate any help given. per ardua per mare per terram Posted 13 November , 2005 Share Posted 13 November , 2005 This is an RND officers card, the microfilms are in ADM 339/3 at Kew, you are missing the front page with his personal details. They were kept by the Admiralty, so were in a different store, and hence survived. His time in the Seaforths will have been on army papers and a copy was probably passed to the Navy, and I have no idea where the'd put that! If the original survived its a WO 363 or 364 job! michaeldr Posted 14 November , 2005 Share Posted 14 November , 2005 Sorry I can’t add anything re the ref nos which you are interested in Sub Lieut George Hume Lawrie died on 30th Dec 1917, the same day as his battalion’s acting CO, Patrick Shaw-Stewart. Command of the Hood then passed to Lieutenant Commander Sidney Fish – see the entry for 18/1/18 The action was at Welsh Ridge; see pages 262 to 268 of Len Sellers’ book ‘The Hood Battalion.’ Regret there is no mention there of Sub Lieut Lawrie. The Hood’s casualties for 30-31st Dec 1917 were Killed; 4 officers and 24 other ranks Wounded; 3 officers and 124 other ranks Missing; 2 officers and 102 other ranks Note; Len gives the source of these figs as ADM137/3085 He also gives the Hood Battalion War Diary ref as ADM137/3064 Regards Michael D.R. michaeldr Posted 14 November , 2005 Share Posted 14 November , 2005 Further to the above There is a brief mention of Lawrie on page 268 of Douglas Jerrold’s history ‘The Royal Naval Division’ – “Very severe losses had, however been suffered by the Hood, whose front line companies had been virtually annihilated; Sub Lieut Lawrie……killed in the course of the morning’s fighting.” Regarding the CO who made the report of Lawrie’s death on 18/1/18 According to Lord Alexander Thynne Fish took over from Shaw-Stewart. However Sellers also mentions that Lt Commander William Egerton eventually took over command of the Hood and he was responsible for putting forward recommendations for awards relating to this action. I regret that I cannot at the moment find details of dates as to exactly when these changes in command of the Hood took place, so the notification of 18/1/18 by the Hood CO could be by either Fish or Egerton Regards Michael D.R. Just joined this forum, so a late contribution. "D.O.xxxx" is a Draft Order No. (or Divisional Order No.). The "AFB" numbers are "Army Form B.2090a - notification of a death in action" and "Army Form B.103 - Casualty Form - Active Service". The contents of these reports were entered on the RND Record Card on receipt by the RND Record Office in London. The original RND Record Cards are all at the Fleet Air Arm Museum and are free of all the filing errors and mis-copying in the TNA microfiche. Hope that helps
