tonycad Posted 12 November , 2005 Share Posted 12 November , 2005 When visiting the Somme, I am always drawn to the Devonshire Military Cemetery, overlooking the shallow valley towards Mametz. It is said to be one of the most famous, and visited cemetery on the Somme Is it its postion on a bluff over-looking the valley, or that so many soldiers died here on the first day of the battle, or the fact that they are buried in a front-line trench So be it. On the road at the bottom of the steps leading up to the cemetery, and just a couple of hundred yards in front and slightly to the right, is the Gordon Cemetery, which is equally and attractive in its setting. It is small, and has a very homely setting as a comrades graveyard. The cemetery contains 99 burials, with the are graves laid out in a circle. The Gordons were on the right flank of the Devons, and also suffered on 1st July. The men were laid out in a support trench in the area.
