Finding a MiD

Yet another Murland causing me grief! Capt. Warren Murland. North Irish Horse, D Squadron I think. MiD 15.5.17 then posted on 17.7.18 to 17th Brigade RGA for duty with Artillery horse lines. Wondering what this was about, have no info that he was wounded or anything. I'm hoping the Mid might throw a light on it. However having some trouble finding the Mid!

Hi I gather you have been searching the London Gazette online. I have just carried out an experiment to see how good the system is. In front of me I have a page of MID from the LG I have tried to search 10 of the less common names, all failed. the numbers were much better found all in the test, tried the page number failed. Tried name and number with correst gaps commas etc total failure.

So numbers are best but not much help for an officer Im afraid.

As you have Gazette date for MiD,I would search within a week either side using the various date option,& just his Surname,ie Murland,if his Christian name{s} are on another line a search would not show them,so especially with unusual surnames I find using just that, sans Forenames /Initials works~~

except in this case apparently!,However a quick search throws up a Murland but not him, being posted from RIR to General List 12.06.1917

CAVALRY (SPECIAL RESERVE).

IRISH HORSE.

Russell, Maj. Hon. A. H.

Waring, Maj. H.

Hughes, Capt. T. W. G. J.

Murland, Capt. W.

Downey, No. 41 Squad. Serjt.-Maj. R. J.

To find MOST of the Mention in Despatches Gazettes type "Special Mention" into the search engine.

Later MID lists are split into six issues: RN, HQ & Cavalry/Artillery & Engineers/Infantry x2 (in order of regmental seniority)/Gen list, ASC, AVC, AOC, etc./Overseas.
