Remembered Today:

Persistance

I recently came across a remarkable story of persistance.

Victor Hunt joined the 7th Beds in September 1914, 46 days later he was discharged as medically unfit. He then joined the 4th West Surreys, 23 days later he was discharged as medically unfit. He then joined the 1st East Surreys where he was operated on for appendicitis. After recovery he was posted to the front where he was wounded and died 2 days before his 18th birthday.

Pte 6337 GVA Hunt, 1st Battalion East Surrey Regiment is buried in the Bailleul Communal Cemetary Extention, Nord.

Has anyone heard a story of similar persistance?. I would be interested to know if SDGW lists both his previous Regiments.

John.

Bill Gammage in his book 'The Broken Years' mentions a man who rode 460 miles to a railhead in central Australia and then took a train to Adelaide to enlist, but he was rejected, he then sailed to Hobart and was again rejected and was finally accepted after he travelled to Sydney.

I think it was James Wood VC of the 48th Bn AIF who was rejected 5 times before he enlisted successfully.

Cheers

Andrew
