welshdoc Posted 11 November , 2005 Share Posted 11 November , 2005 Hi all, I see on an auction site an unnamed 1915 star medal. I have seen several other medals for sale recently including War medal, victory and even a DCM. Now I understand that MM were awarded to foreign nationals, but what about the others?. Were there unnamed versions of these medals awarded or are they extras produced and later released. Two good examples of these are the Philly 1944 (I think that the right year) Bronze stars and the German West wall medals which came to light a few years ago. Another thing I find strange is the fact that medal collectors will pay over the odds for erased medals presumably because they cant stand the idea of vandalising a mans hard earned medal themselves. Personally I prefer to hunt for the original (never once succeeded though and now have lots of orphans. Still live in hope. Please keep this apolitical and avoid slagging off auction sellers as the poor moderators are having a rough time at present. PS good luck to all the British and Irish teams in this weekends Rugby (sorry NZ Australia SA and Fiji). Gareth
Anthony Bagshaw Posted 11 November , 2005 Share Posted 11 November , 2005 Another thing I find strange is the fact that medal collectors will pay over the odds for erased medals presumably because they cant stand the idea of vandalising a mans hard earned medal themselves Something most of us find strange too. These medals are virtualy worthless to me and i know several others who will have the same opinion. With regards to un named medals there were DCM's also awarded to foreign nationals and these have a high value. There were also some un named 1914, 1914-15 stars, BWM's and Victory medals and these do also command high prices. The problem now, of course, is people are seeing this and trying to pass erased medals off as un named originals.
