Mark Hone Posted 11 November , 2005 Share Posted 11 November , 2005 Thank you to our glorious leader for his absorbing and eye-opening talk on Economic Warfare to the WFA Cheshire and Lancashire Branch last night. He managed to make tables of statistics fascinating (more than any Economics lecturer I've ever had has managed). He was not even remotely fazed by an ACF drill instructor screaming 'By the left, quick march!' every few seconds in the hall next door. As always it was good to put a living person to the name, even though I had a fair idea of what the great one looked like from the odd photo on the website. Sorry I had to rush away at the end and couldn't stop for tea, biscuits etc.
John_Hartley Posted 11 November , 2005 Share Posted 11 November , 2005 Definately a different spin on the war and one of the more interesting we've had in recent times (but then I did study economics for my professional qualification). Good to meet the great man himself at last. And just a reminder that next month's speaker is Kate Wills on "Pantomimes in Salonika". Oh, no she isnt. Oh, yes she is. And very early notification that the speaker in September 2006 is the Branch's first ferner as a speaker. Give it up you Lancastrians & Cestrians for the Forum's very own MISTAH PAUL GUTHRIE! paul guthrie Posted 11 November , 2005 Share Posted 11 November , 2005 No need for applause gentlemen, no need for that, please hold the applause, I am quite embarassed by it all, thank you so very much but couldn't each of you just buy me a beer instead! Mistah Paul Guthrie Part of my reason for being in that part of England apart from the fact it's my favorite area of the country is to visit places associated with two Lancashire soldiers I have researched including a MGC man John Henry Hartley who must have believed he had escaped the horrors of the western front when he was sent to Camp Zachary Taylor Kentucky where he died I am nearly sure of flu. He is buried under a fine headstone bought by American soldiers with the Rupert Brooke words on one side ... that is forever England.

Dawson Posted 12 November , 2005 Share Posted 12 November , 2005 I'm with John on this one. A brilliant speach on a very interesting subject. One to look out for if he is speaking at your local WFA meeting. But the talk at the Stockport TA centre just may be my last, as if they are moving to Fridays, myself and my friends just wont be going. Don't they know Friday is a time for drunken debauchery!!! Ian.
John_Hartley Posted 12 November , 2005 Share Posted 12 November , 2005 Ian I really do wish we could manage to identify each other in there. I'm with you about the move to Fridays. I think the branch committee is under-estimating the numbers who will drift off - and I've told the Chairman so, in my usual non-so-subtle way. Friday is a lousy night for hobby clubs, associations, etc. John (PS for Mistah Guthrie - whatever the change for other months, your talk is still on the Thursday. It was announced last week - so no backing out now.)
