Promenade Posted 12 August , 2003 Posted 12 August , 2003 Pilgrim, I assume that you have access to Soldiers Died information and extracted information from the CWGC Website. If not I can furnish this info. Pte Fred Hodson appears in the National Roll of Honour book for Birmingham which states that he volunteered in Sept 1914 and was killed after a few weeks active service. The second man you refer to is Private Harold Hobson (nb Hobson) No 11172 who enlisted in 8 Glos Regt on 27 Aug 1914 and was drafted to France probably on 18 July 1915. He later transferred to 10 Glos Regt and later to 1/6 Glos Regt. His DCM was gazetted 13/2/17 'For conspicuous gallantry in action. The citation states 'He rallied men on several occasions and repeatedly carried messages under heavy fire'. I can find no mention of him in the 8th or 10th Glos War Diaries. He was from Smethwick. However if he is still your man I have a photo of him with 1/6 Glos Regt in Italy which I can send you. Finally the only book I know on 10 Glos Regt is 'In the Shadow of Lone Tree (The Ordeal of Gloucestershire men at the Battle of Loos - 1915)' by Nick Christian and published in 1996 in softback - I believe that it is now out of print but you may be able to oder a copy on inter-library loan. The ISBN is 0 9528378 0 3. Regards Joe Devereux
pilgrim Posted 12 August , 2003 Author Posted 12 August , 2003 Thanx Doug for info on Frederick Hodson. KIA is Killed In Action but being 'thick' what does F&F mean? Do you have access to info relating to when he was transfered from Worcesters or why...or was this usaul? Thanx Promenade too...Great stuff. I have seen CWGC web site page on him but would welcome any other info. Hobson not mine, I mistook Hobson for Hodson!. Useful info on the book mentioned and will try to obtain. will try to look up or obtain National Roll of Honour for entry there as it would be nice to have copy of actyal entry in it. Thanx again. Pilgrim.
Terry_Reeves Posted 12 August , 2003 Posted 12 August , 2003 Pilgrim From National Roll of the Great War Section V1(Birmingham): Hodson F. Private Gloucestershire Regiment He volunteered in September 1914, and after his training was drafted to the Western Front. There, after only a few weeks active service he was killed in action at the Battle of Loos, on September 25th, 1915. He was entitled to the 1914-15 Star, and the General Service and Victory Medals. 7/24 Tudor Street, Winson Green, Birmingham. Phillip Warner mentions 10th Gloucesters in his book The Battle of Loos. As part of the First Division they were advancing towards Hulloch on the 25th Sept particularly the Lone Tree Ridge area, the Divisional front being between the Vermelles - Hulloch road on the left flank and Philosophe on the Right According to Warner "Much more success was obtained by the Gloucesters and the Berkshires to the left. Casualties were appalling - only 60 men survived from the 10th Gloucesters." Terry Reeves

pilgrim Posted 13 August , 2003 Author Posted 13 August , 2003 Hello and Many Thanx to all who replied and sent information on this subject. Once again I am delighted and amazed at the speed of replies and the knowledge of things WW1 that so many have. I shall be ordering the books mentioned via inter-library loan. When one reads about conditions in WW1 and of the appaling loss of so many lives I have to admit that I am 'moved' greatly. I recall reading an article some years ago about this great conflict in which so many suffered and died on all sides and two inscriptions on headstones seemed to sum-up how relatives must have felt; "To my Son: Since your eyes were closed in Death, Mine have not ceased to cry" On a german grave writen by his father. "To My Son: You were too young to die and died too soon" I think this was on a French soldiers grave. What a pity 'our' lot never really got the 'Home Fit For Heroes' when it was all over. Thanx Pilgrim I know it's a few years since your post but I'm trying to get info on Frederick Jesse Belson (15627) of the same who was killed 13/10/15 at Loos. Thanks Gary
Guest Posted 16 November , 2014 Posted 16 November , 2014 Hi Frederick Jesse Belson was my Great Nans brother. He was born in Chalgrove, Oxon. I have done some research on Jesse as he was known, we have some pictures of him and I followed his path to F& F where he was sadly killed. If you would like any other information get in touch, I may be able to help. My Great Nan had his medals from WW1, I remember seeing them.
