A sad but interesting tale, and one that probably happened more than once.

Thanks for posting it.

I was just wondering if anyone had an update on it?

According to SDGW and CWGC the six corporals who died on 01/07/16 were:

Connelly T. 24/1574 Thiepval Memorial

Cross J. 24/608 Thiepval Memorial

Kettle A. 24/1035 Thiepval Memorial

Mackie R. 24/118 Orvillers Military Cemetery

Ramsay A. 24/1703 Thiepval Memorial

Ruse R. 24/1712 Thiepval Memorial

From 02/07/16 till 05/07/16 only one other Corporal had died and that was Lofthouse W. H. 24/1688

So Kettle A. 24/1035 Thiepval Memorial is an extra corporal to the ones in the story

Now this is strange I have checked SDGW and CWGC again and Lofthouse W. H. 24/1688 is actually Lofthouse W. H. 29/1688 in 24 NF?

And when I just typed the number 24/1688 in SDGW it comes up with Hansom C. W. 24/1688 Private 24 NF? died of wounds 02/07/16 (Hanson C. W. 24/1688 Private 24 NF at CWGC)

(note in the story Lofthouse W. H. is buried in the Durham cemetery with the number 24/1688 not 29/1688)

????????????????????????????

At CWGC Lofthouse W. H. 29/1688 commemoration details have been changed from Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille as in the story to a special memorial at

Durham (St. Nicholas) Burial Ground.

So what happened to the grave of Lofthouse W. H. in Terlincthun British Cemetery?

Who lies there then?

Seems no Lofthouse at Terlincthun. I thought the story begged the question as to whether the Terlincthun burial was really Wm Lofthouse (as against who may be buried in Durham). I bet there are more than a few of these mismatches still to be uncovered, if ever at all.
