National Roll of The Great War

Bob, I am no expert at this but I think someone more knowledgeable than I on the forum said that people actually paid to have their names entered. So, its no surprise to me that I cannot find my grandad - I do not think he was affluent enough. Then again, who was.

As Paul rightly says it lists women and all kinds of info. Someone else pointed out that they thought that some of it was made up (could be true - i really don't know) Perhaps Dick Flory will know more.

Or probably anyone else. But, I do think you have to bear in mind that even though someone came from a certain area it does not necessarily follow that they will be found in the volume for that area.

I suppose that is why they have some sort of index as a pointer.

I dont suppose I have been much help. But Bob, there are so many people on this forum with far greater nouse than I have so put a posting - someone will give you the answer you want.

Paul, yes, forgot that - you are quite right. Thanks for the reminder.

Susan.

Hi Susan,

If you are still offering lookups could you try this one,

12159 Pte William Anderson, Gordon Highlanders from Aberdeenshire.

From previous lookups there don't appear to be many "Jocks" but you never know.

Thanks in advance,

Donny

Donny,

have looked in index - found 13 references to a W Anderson, WC, WH and WJ Anderson

looked up 11 fo them - am afraid there is no trace.

I do not have two of the volumes they mention:

volume 9 page 3 (volume 9 covers the bradford area)

or

volume 12 page 253 (volume 12 covers bedfordshire area).

Darren,

The National Roll (Index) mainly lists men who survived the Great War (having said that I cannot find my own grandad in it!). Perhaps if you post this in "soldiers" section stebie may answer you query. The fellows on here are so knowledgeable. Hope you find what you want.

Susan.

Hi Susan

If your offer of lookup is available I'm looking for Edward Adams, born Dundee 1888. I'm not sure if the roll covers Scottish soldiers as I've never seen mention of a Scottish volume?

Any help appreciated.

Thanks

Chris

Regading enquiries on Scottish soldiers there are no volumes on those who lived in Scotland but they may well be exiles in there if they lived roughly south of Manchester, the areas covered are

Vol 1 ,2 and 3 West, Central & North London, Vol 4 Southampton, Vol 5 (pass), Vol 6 Birmingham, Vol 7 West, South East & Central London, Vol 8 Leeds, Vol 9 Bradford , Volume 10 Portsmouth, Vol 12 and 13 (pass), Vol 14 Salford and some of Manchester.

As you can see thats a whole lot of England missing, all of of Scotland, Wales and Ireland :( Sorry guys and gals.
