Rog123 Posted 4 December , 2002 Share Posted 4 December , 2002 Hello, does anyone know how many British troops (not Dominion or Commonwealth) actually served on the western front with the BEF throughout WWI?I have read that at the height of the war, there were 59 British divisions in France. If a division had 18000 men, then this would amount to just over a million troops. However,I have read elsewhere that in 1917, the BEF amounted to just over 2million men.Would this latter figure include Commonwealth troops (i.e Canadians,Australians,Indians etc). I would be greatful for any clarification. Thanks in advance, Ron Brown
charlesmessenger Posted 4 December , 2002 Share Posted 4 December , 2002 The peak British strength, excluding Dominion forces, on the Westsern Front was reached on 1 August 1917. It was 66,392 Officers and 1,654,664 Other Ranks. When casualties are taken into account, the number serving in France & Flanders throughout WW1 would have been well in excess of two million, probably 2.5 million. Remember that there were large numbers of troops not serving in divisions. These were those designated Corps and Army troops and those serving on the lines of communication.
