Remembered Today:

Old Contemptibles Honours & Awards

Andrew Hesketh

Recommended Posts

Subtitled, "Officers and men of the Naval and Military Forces of Great Britain and the Empire Mentioned in Despatches with Related Honours and Awards 1914-15". This is a 1991 reprint of the original 1915 edition. It's not the easiest book to use, but if you have a name backed up by a regiment I should be able to find if the man in question is listed within. Note that it does not give any citations or further details and despite the all-encompassing title, the book only goes as far as 11 June 1915.

Doug,

I'm afraid that none of the men above are listed. I should have stated that despite the all-encompassing title, the book only goes as far as 11 June 1915. Maybe, therefore, that (at the very least) narrows the time-frame for you in your research into these three men.

All the best,

Andrew

Not a request but a query.

I have always classed the Old Contempibles as those that served from mons to first ypres, by definition of the dates covered in this book am i wrong and what reason is the 11th june 1915 given as the ending date.

Not being picky just curious

Arm.

ps having just re read the first post i see it is a reprint of 1915 edition so i have answered my own question i guess.

Arm,

Yes, that made me ponder too. The introduction to the reprint by the late Graham Maddocks does not give an indication as to why either. 11 June 1915 is the date given on the dust-jacket, but the last date I can find is 20 march 1915. All a bit strange really.

Could you please look up CSM Frank Bytheway 8860 1st Bn South Staffordshire Regiment mentioned? He was awarded the DCM 29/10/1914 and Russian Cross of the Order of St George (4th Class) ?

Michael & Ernie,

Sorry, no mention, which seems particularly odd in the Bytheway case.
