Doug Lewis Posted 28 June , 2006 Author Share Posted 28 June , 2006 Lynne It took me a while to find David, you didn't say that he served under the name Price Born-Llanrug, Carnarvon Enlisted-Brecon Killed in Action 6/4/16 You will find more here on the Long Long Trail http://www.1914-1918.net/swb.htm Taken from the History of the South Wales Borderers "for about 9pm on April 6th the enemy suddenly opened a tremendous bombardment, barraging the communication and support trenches and systematically destroying the fire trenches and wire with minewerfrer.Great damage was inflicted especially on the right of the line held by C Company dug outs were smashed in and some of the occupants buried....At 10.30pm the bombardment ceased and the battalion could re occupy the front trench...not only the front line but the communication trenches were badly knocked about, the wire had practically demolished....29 men wounded and killed 18 missing." Sadly your relative was one killed in this action. Owen Williams Born-Llanrug,Carn Enlisted-Pontypridd Resident-Llaberis Killed in Action Yes the 14th Btn, better known as the Swansea Pals began their attack on Mametz Wood on this day. Bernard Lewis a member of the forum has written an excellent book on this Battalion. If you go here on the Long Long Trail (the mother site) http://www.1914-1918.net/welsh.htm you will learn more about the 14th Btn and Bernards book. Regards Doug. rhayader Posted 28 June , 2006 Share Posted 28 June , 2006 Thank you for that. It's interesting to know that he joined up in Pontypridd as his other 2 brothers moved there to work in the coal mines. If you find out anything about his brother can you let me know. Thank you so much. Lynne

Hywyn Posted 9 August , 2006 Share Posted 9 August , 2006 Hello Doug Itis my intention to approach CWGC with what I believe to be a typo but I would be obliged if you could supply the SDGW details to confirm my suspicions. 1. A local Chaple commemorates Robert Williams( with address) as a WWW1 casuality. 2. Local newspaper of June 1915 carries story of same man killed on the battlefield on 16th May 1915 and buried at Festubert. He was with the 1st RWF and was aged 38yrs. 3. RWF Roll of Honour has two R Williams shown killed that day. One is a Richard and the other is Pte 5977 R Williams. 4 CWGC shows that Pte 5977 died 16th May 1916 aged 37 and is on Thiepval Memorial. Knowing what SDGW says about Pte 5977 R Williams would be advantageous. ( I'm assuming that his original grave was 'lost' in the tide of war.) many thanks in anticipation Hywyn
