Remembered Today:

Index of Military Medals from the London Gazette

Recommended Posts

Having waded through the London Gazette searching for various medals, etc. I have been frustrated that some seem to be unfindable without some serious deviousness towards the Search Engine.

I'm sure you've all had "issues" with the Gazette search at one point or ten.

And so I came to think "I wish there was an index to this thing!".

So like a fool, I started to make one.

Here is the first set of results from 3 weeks labour.

An Index of the MMs awarded to men from British units during 1916 from across 30 Gazettes, totalling 16,400 entries.

At the moment I have these sortable by Surname, Unit, Rank, and Gazette issue.

So, if anyone would like a name looked up or a list of MMs by Regiment/Corps I would be happy to oblige.

There are of course several things to bear in mind:

1) Only the information from the Gazette is shown. This generally does not include specific Battalions/units, excpet for awards in the 3rd June 1916 Gazette. In Late 1918, the units were shown again, but you'll have to wait for those ones!

Of course, for your £3.50 from the NA, you will get a unit name in addition to the Gazette entry, but I hope I can save a few £3.50s for people just looking for Gazette dates or the awards to particular Regiments.

2) The PDF scans have been copied and pasted. One of the reasons why people can't find people in the Gazette is because the OCR conversion has misread the pages. While 95% of the entries are OK, the software has a penchant for misreading capital "R"s as either "E"s or occasionally "B"s (Good job there are no Regiments with the name Royal in them!).

While I have tried to correct the most obvious misreads I haven't got a millenia spare, so some will have slipped the net. The worst problem will probably be the difference between "R. Lan. R." and "E. Lan. R.".

3) I am only human, so there is always a chance I have messed something up that would otherwise have been OK. (Interpretation of some numbers might be a bit off, for example)

Anyway, enough waffle.

I hope some people can find this of use,

(And I hope I get a query or two!)

Steve.

Andy,

PM sent.

Chris,

Thought you might want those. Check out your Lt. Catling Topic, too!

Bob,

Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers MMs PM'd to you.

Paul,

You can have the list of 720 London Regiment MMs if you want! The gazette doesn't give many clues to battalions for 1916. When I get to 1917 I should be able to ID the 21st Battalion ones by the TF re-numbers but until then these are the ones with battalion details:

Gazette / Page/ Gazette date / Gazette details.

29608 / 36 / 03-Jun-16 / 2019 L/C. A.E.Charman, 21st Bn., Lond. R. (T.F.).

29608 / 36 / 03-Jun-16 / 1216 L/C. F. C. Clarke, 21st Bn., Lond. R.

29608 / 37 / 03-Jun-16 / 2886 Pte. P. H. Cox, 21st Bn., Lond. R. (T.F.).

29608 / 38 / 03-Jun-16 / 1709 Cpl. T. P. Fry, 1/21st Bn., Lond. R. (T.F.).

29608 / 39 / 03-Jun-16 / 1673 L/C. C. H. Hales, 21st Bn., Lond. R.

29608 / 42 / 03-Jun-16 / 1862 L/Sjt. J. Newman, 1/21st Bn., Lond. R. (T.F.).

3rd June 1916 Gazette MMs only I'm afraid Paul. I'll keep an eye out, though when the numbers change.

Steve.

"Ditto" There's a name or two there I recognise!

Tremendous effort

The sad thing is that the actual printed Gazettes/Supplements are indexed, why this was not transposed to Online searches I{& no doubt most researchers} shall never understand.

Harry,

Had you in mind too when I chose the Cambridgeshires as my example. I suspected that there was a master index in the background and that it wasn't "reading" the PDFs every time. Oh, well. The Gazette wouldn't be so much "fun" if we could search it easily, now would it?

I'm getting well on the way through 1917 at the moment. Look foward to Volume 2!

A Gentleman & Scholar! ;)

I have a Suffolk Man who is giving me problems,he has an MM/DCM/Women's Services Index Card in addition to his Normal Campaign Medal[Trio] MiC,but despite an extensive LG Search{ie::Every "Tye" in the LG for the WW1 & 1901~1925 era}I couldn't find him, though I did find another man of the same name in another unit

I wonder if you have come across him in your searches,in a way I am hoping it is an error,as I have his Trio & would hate to think I am missing an MM!

MiC::

5925[Later 20138~Northamptonshire Regiment] Frederick TYE Suffolk Regiment

Secondary MiC [MM/DCM/WS]::

5925 F Tye Suffolk Regt.

Failing that I suppose it'll be a £3.50 job!;trouble is there's too many to do!

Steve,

Thank you for the 21st London info. 720 is quite a few!

There must be a way I can sift the info out but this will have to wait as I have a few projects on the go that need to be finished.

The 1917 stuff will be of great interest. Can you please keep me in the loop for that.

Kind Regards

Well done, just 1917, 1918 and 1919 to index now!

Can you look for the following please:

Sgt Major (possibly) Ernest STILL, serving with a Trench Mortar Battery. Awarded MM some time prior to November 1916.

Sorry the details are so sketchy but hopefully you'll be able to find him.

Well done on your initiative.

Great work Steve,

I've certainly been flummoxed by the Gazette search engine on many occasions, even when I know an entry exists and have looked at it on a previous search.

Could I please trouble you for the list of the 23rd London if any are identifiable.

And I'll pm you my email address if you'd be kind enough to provide the 720 London Regt entries. I'll check them on the MICs etc. and hopefully we'll get some inkling of the battalion spread.

Best Regards,

Matthew

Matthew,

Would you prefer an an Excel file (my DB is in Corel Quattro 12, but I think I can save as an Excel file), or a sorted list? If the sorted list then what sort criteria (Number/surname?)

Paul/Christina. I'll check out your men tonight.

Hi Steve,

I too would like to take advantage of your hard work :)

Could you please provide me with awards to the King's Own Scottish Borderers? I'm mostly interested in the territorials, but am not sure if they will always be identified as such. Therefore, can you let me have the list in ascending regt. no. order - the men I'm looking for should mostly be in the range 1-3000, perhaps a few in the low 4000s.

Thanks,

Stuart

Some of them are identified by (T.F.), if not all, so that will hopefully help you, Stuart.

I obviously need to get cracking on the re-numbers in 1917, don't I!

Paul,

Ernest Still.

There is this one:

Gazette No/ page / date / details.

29780 / 10 / 10-Oct-16 / 1657 Actg Cpl. E. Still, R. Suss. R.

Who would be this man:

Medal card of Still, Ernest

Corps Regiment No Rank

Royal Sussex Regiment G/1657 Private

Royal Sussex Regiment G/1657 Corporal

http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/documen...1&resultcount=2

Name and time right. Wrong rank, and no mention of S/Mjr or even attaining it, and no mention of a trench mortar battery, either.

Only other Still is this one:

29854 / 14 / 09-Dec-16 / M2/194988 Pte. F. Still, A.S.C. and M. Gun Corps.

He's one of the tank drivers at Fler-Courcellete. D11 - Die Hard to be exact.

No other Stills or likely variations during 1916 or up to Aug 1917, either.

Any good?

Steve.
