I am researching the above soldier who though British born like so may others enlisted in the AIF . In a letter home Taylor makes reference to the riots of Kersr el Nil "when red caps shot several Australians and territorials"

Has anybody any specific details regarding these riots please

Thanks

Dorrie

The letter could have been referring to the 'Battle of Wazzer' in which some NZ & Australian troops burnt down a brothel in Cairo around Feb/March 1915.

The MP's & territorials were called out and there have been rumours that some Australians & New Zealanders were killed and wounded.

From what I've heard of this event there were many more onlookers than actually took part.

Regards

Andrew

This is a page from the thread which contains the diary of Lt. J. Pitt, 8th Battalion AIF.

In the entry ated April 2nd, he gives an account of a riot in which Redcaps shot at rioters. An earlier entry references the burning down of a brothel. Could this be the riot you mention?
