Hi Jim,

Just too let you know I made a start last weekend with the local ones but unable to find the graves of the first two. Leckhampton, Frances Wilkins and Charlton Kings, Ada Parry. I spent the afternoon split between the two until light and bad weather ended it. Yesterday was a wash out, today I had plans but I have sent some communication to local authorities and history groups too help narrow down the two burials. I have also set out a plan for the others with some investigation started prior to visiting them over the next few weeks.

Regards,

Simon.

This Saturday we're going to Blackburn. What are your requirements from Blackburn Bolton and Turton and we'll try to do 2 more

You're a star.

BLACKBURN - Isabella COTTON, VAD, died 1918, aged 27. Buried in Blackburn cemetery (plot number not known). I will eventually get the plot details from Deceased-on-Line if I cannot find it from elsewhere..

BOLTON - Ellen ALLISON, civilian, died aged 32, killed in a zepellin raid. She is buried in Tonge cemetery but plot number unknown. Probably unmarked.

TURTON - Mary Jane MELLODY, VAD, died 15th January 1920, aged 46. She is buried in St. Annes churchyard, Turton, in plot 65.

I cannot expect you to traipse around cemeteries in Blackburn and Bolton in the hope that you stumble across those graves. But just to throw into the mix I have one at TYLDESLEY which may be convenient depending how you are going to approach Bolton. It is 7 miles away to the south west. Mary Alice MARSH, VAD, died 27th February 1919, aged 33, is buried in grave 287, row CE, plot C, Tyldesley Cemetery.

Evening Jim,

Just an update: Gloucs

Lydney + Berkeley: ongoing

Cheltenham, Leckhampton and Oakridge Lynch: weather permitting tomorrow. (Could you send me the pic of Olive Fawkes to see if it is one of mine

as I cannot find the original if it was me. I can tell if it is one I took)

Charlton Kings: Can you check your records/notes on Ada Parry. Unable to locate her grave so checked with Cheltenham Council and their records

which are normally very accurate have no record of a burial to her in King's or Cheltenham. There are two other churchyards in King's

which have burials so she may be buried in one of them even though the plot info you gave is consistent with King's.

Lastly Coleford: Frustrating news I'm afraid. St.Johns church closed for worship in 2012. In the last year or two it was put up for sale after a consultation

with local groups, RBL and residents. After a conversation with the local parish council it was relayed that no-one has access to the church

as it is in the control of the church commissioners based in London. Not even the local clergy can get access. Once sold, but before handover

there will be another consultation with the named groups to decide what to do with any religious items, records and the war memorial. I have

left my details with the Parish Council and the RBL for when this takes place.

Regards Simon.

Olive Fawkes - Will try and send as an attachment in Messenger. Otherwise I will need your email address. Actually the photograph has a distorted image making it look squat.

Ada Betty Parry - Sorry, no more information on file other than that which I have provided.

Coleford - This is bad news. I hope that the church memorials and any other accoutrements are saved.

I did a day visit to Cardiff some years ago so I have only one there. The Saltmead Gospel Hall has a War Memorial on which is the name of Elsie Lavinia Gibbs, munition worker. I actually have a photograph off the Web but I do not have copyright.

This is a copy of an email I sent you re this lady when I dealt with the other Bolton Zepellin victims a couple of years ago.  I researched her deeply and was given access to private records not available to the public And feel you would be asking someone to carry out an extremely difficult wild goose chase. Mr. John White was in charge of the cemetery records for Bolton at the time and he carried out very thorough searches for me over the internments in Tongue cemetery. No trace of Ellen Allison could be found. The only record I could not peruse was the coroners court transcript of the inquest as it was destroyed under a 100 year rule a few months before I started the research. The funerals were well covered by local newspapers at the time but there is no mention of the Allisons.

Allisons. Bolton Zeppelin victims on 26/9/16

James and Ellen Allison

There is no trace of their internments in any online , Microfilm, or documentation records for the South Lancashire area that I can find.  Records checked go up to 1918 and are  at the Salford, Bolton, Wigan, Leigh archives and the Lancashire records office. Dean church records are not online and the original registers have been checked but the Allisons are not featured.  They may have been members of a non-conformist religion (ie. Congregationalists) and church records may not exist

Their deaths were registered at Bolton registry, entry numbers SWB/19/225 and SWB/19226. James was 34 years old and Ellen was 32 years old at the time of their deaths

I have Ellen as maiden name ‘Yates’

Her parents were James, aged 20 (a collier by occupation) and Alice , aged 19 (nee Scotson) Who were Married at Holy Trinity Church, Bolton on 12/7/1869 ( index Bolton registry 21/3/282)

Their first child , Mary Anne was born in Bolton. And the family were living in Atherton A short time after that the family moved back to James home town of Leigh, specifically to the area he came from known as Westleigh, where all the other children were born.

Ellen, AKA Nelly  was born in 1883 in the Westleigh district and and the birth was registered at Wigan ( WL/31/220)

The Family are shown as living at 33 Baker Street, (Which is in Westleigh, close to St. Marys Church)

In the 1891 Census and ‘ Nelly’ is listed as being aged 8. Her fathers occupation is given as ‘Coal miner’ aged 44

In the 1901 census, they are still living at 33 Baker street, Ellen is listed as Nelly, aged 17 and her father aged 52 is still a Coal miner. The mother , Alice, is still alive and living with them aged 50

James and Ellen were married at St.Marys in lower Ince in on 17/5/1902  (Wigan register WLC10L/5/48).  Ellens father is listed as James Yates ( collier) Ellen and James both gave their address as 33 Baker street, Leigh . Witnesses were Nathan Yates ( brides brother) and Mary Ann leedham  . There are no records of children born to the marriage.

The mother, Alice died in Leigh aged 52 in 1903 and the death was registered at Wigan ( WIG/160/459)

In the 1911 Census They are shown as living at 11 Derby Street, Bolton with a boarder, James Yates, a collier aged 61 who is listed as a widower. Due to the coal mining heritage of Ellen’s Father, I believe this is him. Name , age , occupation and widower status all match in the majority of the data.  The fathers age on the 1891 census appears to be a mistake, corrected on the 1901 census.

Death appears to have been instantaneous and there is a distinct possibility that there were insufficient remains found to enable burial to take place.

Hi Jim,

If you can give me details of some of the Yorkshire burials as below, then I shall see what I can do over the coming months.

Burley in Wharfedale, Colton, Danby Wiske, Halifax, Ingleton, Low Moor, Skipton and Staithes.

Some are easier for me than others, but I shall give them a go when the chance arises.

There is one between Cardiff and Penarth, on the A4232, and another not far away, due south of Cowbridge.

When I was visiting one of the Hamilton Ontario cemeteries yesterday I noticed a large number of new veteran grave markers which I understand were erected in the last year. I'm in contact with a relative of William Redmond , whose grave marker I chose to photograph. As I surmised from his age he served in WWI.

Previously the veteran markers were bronze plaques at ground level and hard to locate and maintain.

If anybody knows of a database for these new additions to remembrance I would appreciate a link.

Thank you

I do not send people on Wild Gosse Chases in the hope that they stumble over a particular grave. That would be self defeating and would be wasting my volunteers time. I only mention a specific grave site when there is a pointer that the person is buried there. Although I cannot put my finger on where I got the information it was probably on a website somewhere. The fact that you cannot find it, or the records pertaining to it, does not mean that she isn't there. Many of the poorer in the community could not afford a headstone and as a munition worker she probably fell into this category. The Allison's had lodgers who were also killed. Frederick Guildford was a packing case maker and is buried in Heaton Cemetery. David Davis was a coal heaver and he is buried in Tonge Cemetery. Unfortunately that same source does not mention where the Allisons were buried but I did not "guess" at it and found a source. As an aside, David Davis is said to be in Tonge Cemetery and having died on the same day and at the same place it seems possible that the Allisons are in the same or an adjoining grave but this is just supposition.

The images are from Estaires Communal Cemetery. The two poppy crosses, behind the cross, mark the graves of Marie Sloran and Rosalie Detourlet.

I will post the relevant documentation relating to these graves in a further post. The research was supplied by Tom Tulloch-Marshall from CWGC sources.

Extract from CWGC notes supplied by Tom;

Marie Sloran and Rosalie Detourlet are described as being located 40 feet in front of graves 5 and 6 in Plot 2, Row A.  They were killed by enemy action (no details) and died in the nearby British hospital. They were buried by the British military and registered by the GRU, their graves marked with GRU crosses. The cemetery file mentions the graves were not in the British plot, but were about 40 feet away with a path intervening. A third grave belonging to a French male civilian was exhumed and taken to Lille in July 1923. According to an extract of minutes for the 149th meeting of the Management Committee dated 4 January 1924, which is included in the cemetery file: “Major Ingpen had said that the graves were French war graves, and having been so far maintained by the Commission, they should be kept tidy until they were handed over to the French National War Graves Commission, who would erect their own headstones.” There is no further information in the cemetery file about this.

Kind regards

John

Robert. Thank you.
