Jim Strawbridge Posted 13 July , 2019 Author Share Posted 13 July , 2019 The photo of the grave that I have is that provided by Steve as being the general area of unmarked graves where she is likely to be. I cannot see that the naming on the panel would be a mistake of the "artist" and I suspect that York Minster was provided with incorrect information. Out of interest the Yorkshire Herald published a full list of female casualties around 1920 and which I have compared with those names on the York Minster panels. There are many differences and I suspect that York Minster and the Yorkshire Herald were provided with lists separately but from the same source. Both the Yorkshire Herald and York Minsters have her as WHIDGETT so I supect the error was made by whoever provided the list to them. The panels are riddled with errors, mistakes, doubling up of names on different panels, etc. I think that correcting the name is likely to prove difficult without damaging the appearance of what is currently there. It would mean stripping back the varnish and it would be hard to match up afterwards. But she is your ancestor and, correctly, you should have the last say. There really are hundreds of mistakes on these panels. There is something rather human about that.

She was buried in a communal grave which is only marked by a numbered stone (hers is 3). I have photographs of the memorial wall and the numbered grave. I also have an early photograph of her grave showing soon after her burial which has a wooden cross with her name on it.

A lot of work has gone into preparing the list. I note that the Leicester Infirmary memorial isn't one that has made the list.

Jim Strawbridge Posted 2 August , 2019 Author Share Posted 2 August , 2019 Thank you Wayne. You are, of course, in my neck of the wood, so I should have taken you for a pint. bostonwayne Posted 25 August , 2019 Share Posted 25 August , 2019 So we are going to wigan on saturday. I can do wigan and 1 on the way which will be m62 and up the m61. What do you need
Jim Strawbridge Posted 27 August , 2019 Author Share Posted 27 August , 2019 Brilliant, thank you. Wigan - Lower Ince cemetery, plot A 329 - Margaret Ashurst, died 12th April 1918 (died in a zeppelin raid). Wigan - Lower Ince cemetery, plot R.C. H.744 - Margaret Silcock, munition worker, died 20th February 1917 Wigan - Lower Ince cemetery, plot CE. B.391 - Jane Tomlinson, died 12th April 1918 (died in zeppelin raid). There are others but I do not know their final resting places. I have heard that Margaret Ashurst's grave may be a common one with others buried with her but a photograph still required if this is the case. As for the other, how about Atherton, which is just off the M61 not far from Wigan ? In Atherton cemetery is the grave of Bertha McIntosh who was a munition worker who died 13th May 1917. It should be fairly easy to find as the headstone is on the BillionGraves website but I cannot use that one for copyright reasons. Next over from Atherton is Tyldesley. Mary Alice Marsh is buried in grave 287, row CE, plot C, Tyldesley cemetery. She died 27th February 1919 and was a Voluntary Aid Detachment member. I have needs in Rochdale but perhaps a little too built up and busy when you are trying to get elsewhere. There is a requirement at Healey which is just north of Rochdale and got at via the A58. With three at Lower Ince cemetery you may not have time to look for any others. Football is far more important. Thank you for your ongoing interest in my project. Much appreciated, Jim

bostonwayne Posted 27 August , 2019 Share Posted 27 August , 2019 Had a look on the web. Atherton is a big cemetery so might not be easy to find the grave. I can't find a plot number from billion graves and the photo isn't clear as to where it is. I will give it 30 minutes there and then on to wigan
