Lilias,

BURLEY IN WHARFDALE :- Joanna Elizabeth HOPPER-GREENWOOD, ex QAIMNS, died 11th April 1921 and is buried in St. Marys churchyard, Burley in Wharfdale.

HORSFORTH :- Florence HOGG, VAD. I have grave and war memorial photos. Apparently Horsforth Council planted a tree along Stanhope Drive for every name on their war memorial so Florence will have a tree planted there. What I don't know is if there was a plaque for each individual tree or if it was a symbolic number of trees to match the number on the as memorial. If an individual tree then I would like a photo of ot and any marker confirming it.In addition, Amelia Beatrice WRIGHT, VAD, died 8th January 1919 and is buried in Horsforth cemetery. A photograph of her grave required. Also a check on the war memorial and, if so, she. too, will have a tree.

INGLETON :- Margaret (Maggie) BARKER, munition worker, died 18th December 1916 and is buried in Ingleton cemetery.

KIPPAX :- Elizabeth FARRAR, munition worker, died 1916. She is buried in St. Mary's churchyard, Kippax.

LEEDS, BECKETT STREET :- Bridget Agnes JUBB, munition worker, died 20th July 1916 and is buried in grave 21003, unconcesecrated section, Beckett Street cemetery, Leeds. A photograph of her grave whether marked or unmarked required. Also in the cemetery is H. ROBINSON, munition worker, who died in 1917. Probably a large cemetery so don't spend too much of your valuable time looking for her.

SKIPTON :- Hilda MOORBY, VAD, died 8th October 1918 and is buried in grave 1454, section C, Waltonwrays cemetery, Skipton. Photograph of her grave,/grave marker required. Originally a common grave it was purchased by the family six months after Hilda's death. At least two other incumbants but not known if pre purchase or family members since.

Hello Heidi, Harriet Hall GOLDING is buried in plot G3, All Saints churchyard, Wokingham. She was a VAD who died on the 27th April 1920. It is possible that the grave does not have a headstone but either way, even if just a grassed-over plot then I should like a photograph.  Kind regards, Jim

Jim, let me know what you need in Cardigan & Lampeter, and Montgomeryshire (Welshpool), Powys (Newtown).

Might not be for a while, but if I have the information to hand and we're heading off that way, I'm happy to go searching. It'll also remind me to check your list next time we go off camping, wherever.

Hi Jim

Back in March 2014 you were looking for Kathleen Cecilia Furber Bennet in Beckford. (A stained glass window in the church and a memorial). Having come across her recently I'm wondering if she is commemorated on the CWGC database. Do you have any information for her?

Yes, I have a fair amount of information about her. For a VAD to be commemorated under the new rules by the CWGC she has to have worked under military regulations. This normally means working at some time of her service in a military controlled hospital. Kathleen Bennett (two ts) served as a cook at Dumbleton Hospital, Evesham followed by working as a nurse at Bath War Hospital. I assume that both of these hospitals were civilian administered.

Many thanks for clarification Jim. I have found lots of interesting facts about her family - she is Remembered and again some very poignant details to events in her life.

Jim,

Apologies for a bit of a delay since my last post.  One Friday in July - the 13th, but I'm not superstitious! - I went to St James's Cemetery in Dover after work to try and get some of the headstones that I had not yet photographed, with the intention of then going to St Mary's Cemetery, which is literally next door.  While balancing on a steep slope I managed to put my foot in a rabbit hole and badly twisted my ankle, ending up lying on someone's grave.  Luckily it was a comfortable grassy one!  My first thought was that I'd broken my ankle but after a while I managed to stand up and hobble back to my car.  I'm not sure how I drove home, but I'm thankful for cruise control.  Once home I finally took my shoe off and my foot was badly swollen.  A lot of cold water reduced the swelling and numbed the pain and I hobbled through the weekend until the Sunday afternoon when my toes started tingling, so I went to my local A&E just to be sure.  Fortunately an x-ray confirmed no break and I was told to put my foot up for a while.  It was nearly 3 weeks before I was back to normal.  With other commitments it wasn't until this weekend that I managed to get my camera out again.

So finally to St Mary's Cemetery...

This is the headstone for Stewardess Edith Maberley.  It took me a while to find her Christian name as all my searches on Ancestry just found her as "E Maberley".  There are a number of passenger records as she appears to have been at sea most of her working life.  Most records had her born in New Zealand, which matches the CWGC record which states Dunedin.  One passenger list record had Dorset, but a search found nothing.  Then doing a final search as part of this post her name came up on a P&O Heritage website.

1567902266_EMaberley.jpg.a29c6c500ac64a3e0fb7ef3ea057df35.jpg

I couldn't find a headstone for Adelaide Ann Palmer.  I don't have a grave reference for her but would expect her to be buried close to Edith Maberley as they were casualties of the same incident.  However she's only listed in the CWGC records on the Tower Hill memorial.

Both names are on a P&O memorial at the National Arboretum according to this P&O Heritage link along with other female casualties.  Someone more local may need to visit there to get images for you!

Not far way is the headstone for Gertude Evelyn Mavis Boorman, 13.  She was killed when enemy shells were fired into Dover from outside the harbour.  The headstone says it was a Submarine attack but eyewitnesses at the harbour state it was a Destroyer.

41821228_GertrudeEvelynMavisBoorman.jpg.2f08aee6802dd7b0966eea6319e6f4eb.jpg

I couldn't find the grave for Jane James.  I think it is in section E.I.  I haven't been able to find a plan for this cemetery so need to search some more.  There were a few CWGC headstones that I couldn't find, including one that is in the same section.  This has a CWGC headstone so "should" be easy to find, so I will have another go at some point.

I did find the CWGC headstone for Margaret Louise Care.  I'm guessing that as this wasn't on your list you already have an image for her.  I'll add it here anyway.

I also managed to revisit Folkestone Old Cemetery and think I've got all of the Tontine Road bomb casualties that you need.  I just need to double check some of the images as they are of plots with no headstones.  It might be the weekend before I can post these.

Full size versions of the above are in the usual place.

Martin, I need photographs of the name of Gertrude Eileen JONES, QAIMNS, died 10th April 1917 on the headstone of her parents in Piershill cemetery, Edinburgh as a remembrance. I haven't got the plot number but believe the inscription to read :-  "In loving memory of John Jones I.R. Died 23rd Nov, 1916. Also his wife Catherine Jane Evans Died 16th March 1896. And of their daughters Margaret Evelyn (Daisy) Died 17th Nov. 1899. Gertrude Eileen, Sister, Q.A.I.M.N.S. (R) Lost with the H.S. Salta 10th April 1917".

I also need a photograph of the grave of Andrina Grierson MENELAWS, VAD, who died 30th October 1918. She is buried in Newington cemetery, Minto Street, Edinburgh. Also the grave of Frances Marion MONEY, VAD, who died 20th December 1919 and is buried in Dean 2D cemetery, Edinburgh.

Also the grave of Elizabeth Robertson THOMSON, QAIMNS, who died 26th October 1918. She has a CWGC grave at plot S.E/60, Edinburgh (Rosebank) cemetery. Jim

Jim

I have taken photos of the Jones grave in Piershill and Thomson in Rosebank (she is also inscribed on her parents’ memorial) as well as another in Rosebank in case you didn’t have it (E.G. Elder of the WRNS). The other two were needles in haystacks I’m afraid. I’ll send you them after I get back home next week.

Cheers Martin B

Thank you Ian and Martin. Ian and I are conversing through the message service. Martin, I already had Elder but can always do with another. I did not know Thomson was also inscribed on parent's memorial so look forward to seeing it.

Hi Jim

Perhaps I wasn’t clear: as far as I could see Thomson is only inscribed on her parents’ memorial. Despite what the CWGC implies, there is no war grave with her name in the section of the cemetery indicated. The inscription says she died “on service”.

Martin, According to CWGC, Elizabeth Robertson Thomson lies in plot S, grave E/60. The Inspector states that her grave has an obelisk as a marker and the grave is kerbed. Consequently we are not talking about a CWGC headstone but a private one. She may be buried with her parents and hence what you have found re the inscription.

As mentioned in post 2012 of this thread I finally made a second visit to Folkestone Old Cemetery.  I had made a brief visit there one evening in early July, only to be thwarted by a sudden dark and overcast sky that made photography difficult.  The results of that visit are in post 1981, a few pages back.  I had located only 6 of the 30 graves before giving up!

Thanks to Chaz, who had been in contact with the Friends of Old Folkestone Cemetery [FoOFC] via their website, I was now armed with a detailed plan for this cemetery, right down to the individual location of each grave.  I only wish I had printed it out, rather than trying to view it on my phone.  A "gotcha" for this cemetery is that you need to know whether a grave is in Consecrated or Unconsecrated ground.  Graves numbered up to around 4800 exist in both Consecrated and Unconsecrated plots, which might be at opposite ends of this cemetery.  I got a few of these wrong and ended up walking a lot further than I needed to!

All but one of these casualties are victims of the Tontine Street Air Raid on 25 May 1917, which killed 60 and injured many more.  A starting point for more information is here.
All names and ages are from the burial register, scans of which are on the Ancestry website, although, typically, they are badly indexed.

The following details are in plot order, so here goes...

Plot 2 - Consecrated Graves

In Grave 6783A are Florence Louise Norris (24), her daughter Florence Kathleen Norris (2) and her son William Alfred John Norris (10 months).  The mother was originally buried in Plot 20, Grave 1851 - see below for several graves near this location - on 30 May 1917.  Her daughter and son were buried on the same day but in Graves 5762 and 5763 respectively in Plot 26.  According to the burial register they were all moved, on 14 July 1917, to the shared grave where they are now.  An image of this was in post 1981.

In Grave 6805B are Annie Beer (30) and her daughter Annie (Rosie) Beer (2½).  In Grave 6805A are her sons Arthur Stephen Beer (11) and William James Beer (9).  There is only a headstone for the mother and daughter, and this has now fallen, fortunately face up.  Similar to the Norris family above they were originally buried on 31 May 1917 in separate graves in different plots.  The mother and eldest son were in Plot 20 in Graves 1868 and 1869 respectively, while the younger son and daughter were in Plot 26 in Graves 5788 and 5781 respectively.  They were moved on 14 July 1917 to their present location.  A photo was also included in post 1981.

Plot 3 - Consecrated Graves

This is Grave 8504 for Martha Godden Hayes (30) and her son Dennis Hayes (2¾).  Jim's request had just Martha Godden and I think this mistake is due to how it is displayed on the FoOFC website.  I've found her 1911 census record, when she was Martha Godden Tumber.  According to the register she was buried on 30 May 1917 and her son the following day.  Dennis is not buried with his mother but in Plot 26 Grave 5790, approximately 300 metres away.  I do not have an image of this grave as it is only while writing these notes that I've discovered this discrepancy.  The burial register has no indication of any re-interment.

2001851958_MarthaGoddenHayes.jpg.9d63da8f1db4ba42f71fba0fe4244ef9.jpg

In Grave 8687 is Isobel Wilson (80).  She was buried on 31 May 1917.  An image of her grave was in post 1981.

In post 1981 there is an image with the outline of Grave 8720 where, according to the FoOFC website, Johanna Mary Hambly rests, without any headstone or memorial.  I have now found that this information is incorrect, so please disregard that image Jim.  In the burial register she is listed as in Grave 7920, still in Plot 3.  I found her grave and there is a headstone.  She was interred with her husband, Edgar Hambly, honorary Captain, Royal Artillery, who predeceased her in 1909.

667531268_JohannaMaryHambly.jpg.e58dd220e554bfdbfc43ab0b5a35e5cc.jpg

Plot 7 - Unconsecrated Graves

In Grave 338 is Edith Mary Grimes (24).  She was buried on 30 May 1917.

1847555447_EdithMayGrimes.jpg.98bf24675b335b3d7595f243fdb290d0.jpg

In Grave 339 (toe-to-head with the above grave) is Fanny Harrison (39).  She was also buried on 30 May 1917.

2110771035_FannyHarrison.jpg.bb7b85e30c878b3861a39b1f7bc1be70.jpg

Near to the above two casualties is Grave 475 for Katherine Euphemia Laxton (72), who was buried on 29 May 1917.  This grave does not have a headstone or any marker.  The grave behind is confirmed as 476.

1041040494_KatherineEuphemiaLaxton.jpg.6074870ff72ef2e89b26a6edb36cf612.jpg

In Grave 386 is Florence Elizabeth Francis (33), who was buried on 1 June 1917.  This headstone is barely legible - the surname can just be made out.

136308037_FlorenceElizabethFrancis.jpg.88198845b6b439fae8fad534d914498d.jpg

It is the correct headstone as it sits adjacent to...

Grave 409 is for Rosina Caroline Hughes (32) who was friends with the above, and together when they were killed - and ever since.

1069846890_RosinaCarolineHughes.jpg.7628159d38592ca73a36661e44468e01.jpg

Plot 8 - Unconsecrated Graves

In Graves 1067 and 1068 are sisters Mary Philomena Holloway (9) and Veronica Mary Holloway (15 months).  They were buried on 30 May 1917.  I couldn't see the name of the younger sister on her headstone but the other details match.  Perhaps it is obscured by the fallen cross?

Plot 13 - Unconsecrated Graves

In Grave 2765 lies Phyllis Aimes Cooper (9½), who was buried on 30 May 1917.  This grave does not have a headstone or any markers so an approximate outline has been added.  There are 3 graves in the gap between headstones and markers and this young girl occupies the middle of these.

1450932687_PhyllisAimesCooper.jpg.cdc26456c64b42bcd5d49a5e9897a6c8.jpg

Plot 16 - Consecrated Graves

In Grave 18 is Phyllis Deck (24).  She is the only casualty here not associated with the Tontine Street Air Raid.  She was a Nursing Sister in a nearby hospital and died of bronchitis and pleurisy following influenza.  She died on 6 October 1918 and was buried 3 days later.  There are some details on the Folkestone History website.

530815458_PhyllisDeck.jpg.ee3a8b7a7bcc27215d6128e00f08ca18.jpg

Plot 17 - Consecrated Graves

In Grave 431 is Doris Eileen Spencer Walton (16), who was buried on 29 May 1917.  This grave does not have a headstone or any markers.

1860779165_DorisEileenSpencerWalton.jpg.12226ef9f41cdbc47ff31ac35b38505f.jpg

Plot 20 - Consecrated Graves

This plot contains the majority of the victims of the Tontine Street Air Raid.  This includes many of the male casualties, who are outside the scope of Jim's project.

In Grave 1700 is Elizabeth Maxted (31), buried on 30 May 1917.  An image of this grave was in post 1981.

In Grave 1702 are mother and daughter Sarah Jane Dicker (41) and Edith Agnes Dicker (13), buried together on 30 May 1917.  Again an image of this grave was in post 1981.

In Grave 1852 is Maggie Gray Bartleet (24), buried on 30 May.  Her husband Major Joseph Johnson Bartleet was added to this grave after his death nearly 30 years later.

1844574335_MaggieGrayBartleet.jpg.48d40573166fadff3a19f72f0ee4e70b.jpg

In Grave 1856 is Hilda Elizabeth Burvill (20), buried on 30 May.  This headstone is rather weathered.

2072603578_HildaElizabethBurvill.jpg.dfd4c3c9fa35a70dee013931ececf2a5.jpg

In Grave 1857 is Mabel Reed (12), buried on 30 May.  This headstone is badly weathered.  I think it suffers from being under the boughs of a yew tree?

1749706125_MabelReed.jpg.cd586f478604cd8782c9a3125aa3ea51.jpg

In Grave 1858 is Edith Gwendoline Terry (13¾).  She was buried on 31 May.

In Grave 1859 is Dorothy Bertha Jackman (14), buried on 31 May.  There is no headstone or marker.

In Grave 1863 is Ethel May Eales (17), buried on 1 June 1917.  This grave has no headstone or marker.  It is directly behind the above grave of Florrie Rumsey.

In Grave 1864 is Caroline Harris (35), buried on 1 June.  If the image looks odd it is because this headstone is tilting forward slightly.

In Grave 1874 is Agnes Curran McDonald (22).  She died on 2 June, 8 days after the Air Raid, and was buried the next day.  There is no headstone or marker for this grave.  The fallen headstone in the following image is not hers.

Plot 21 - Consecrated Graves

In Grave 2758 is Louisa Alice Hayward (37).  She died on the day of the Air Raid and was buried on 2 June.  I couldn't read anything on the marker without distubring the fallen cross.  However the grave in front of it is 2757 so I'm confident this is the correct location.

I believe that completes the requirements for this location.  If I've missed anything then let me know and I can easily go back.

I will return to Dover St Mary's Cemetery to try and locate the two missing headstones - Adelaide Ann Palmer and Jane James.  However this may not be for a few weeks as I'm off on holiday in a few days to visit war cemeteries in Holland, Germany and maybe Denmark, weather permitting.

Blimey, that was quick. I only put the place up yesterday. At least someone is looking at my list.

It won't come as a surprise to hear that it is the National Memorial Arboretum that is wanted. I know that there is a P & O memorial there with the name of lost stewardesses on it. There is also a memorial in the shape of a large granite ball with the names of nurses on it. I need both.

As an aside the P & O Memorial I believe to be incomplete as there is a name missing. Constance Fernandes. The P & O names I believe were taken from the names on the Tower Hill Memorial under the respective ships. But Constance Fernandes was a member of the Indian Mercantile Marine on a P & O ship and her name is on the Bombay 1914 - 18 Memorial. I yesterday sent an email to P & O for clarification.

I just want to make a public thank you to Ian of Imagination (Imaginatian) for the time and effort he has put in to getting photographs of the graves of casualties from the Folkestone air-raids. This has been most helpful and much appreciated.

ps.

(Plot 3 - Consecrated Graves

"This is Grave 8504 for Martha Godden Hayes (30) and her son Dennis Hayes (2¾).  Jim's request had just Martha Godden and I think this mistake is due to how it is displayed on the FoOFC website)".

Not a mistake on my part as my project relates solely to females. I was aware of Dennis and he is mentioned in my mini-biography of Martha that I have prepared but a photograph of his grave was not needed for me so I didn't ask for one.

Jim,

It was an interesting challenge to find these graves.  As noted I had a bit of help from Chaz.  On my second visit I spoke to a couple of the Friends of the cemetery.  When I mentioned the Air Raid they pointed out a lady close by who "knows everything about it".  Margaret is related to the Stokes family - it was their greengrocer's shop that the bomb landed outside of, where there was a large queue due to a recent delivery of potatoes.  Margaret was instrumental in organising the 100 year anniversary memorial.

I also found all the CWGC graves in the cemetery, plus the 3 (pre-WW1) Victoria Cross holders who are buried here, and also some graves referencing casualties who had fallen and were buried in France and Belgium.

There's some confusion about Martha Godden Hayes!  The details on the Friends of Old Folkestone Web Site read as "Martha Godden & Dennis Hayes" and could be interpreted as "Martha Godden Hayes and son Dennis" or "Martha Godden and Dennis Hayes Godden".  My initial notes had Godden as the surname.  I was just trying to clarify the surname is Hayes.  While Dennis is out of scope for you I tried to list all the air raid casualties in graves where there were female casualties, putting male casualties in italics.

Right at the end of my visit I took a photo of a grave for "Jackie", the beloved child of John and Grace Robertson, who was killed by German aircraft.  I didn't have anyone of this name in my notes and as I wasn't only 100% sure of their gender I took a picture just in case!  When I got home the records confirmed this as John Walter Francis Robinson.  It's actually the most legible of all the air raid graves.

Hello Jim

Any update regarding Jeanie E. McClymont at Dunblane?

The last we talked, you said

"The CWGC has accepted her for commemoration in July 2016. She is in a multiple family grave (you took the photograph) and I thought that I would just keep her on the list in case she gets her own CWGC headstone. I know that this can take several years."

Best regards

Kenny

PS probably easier to get me via Facebook
