Frank_East Posted 21 August , 2007 Share Posted 21 August , 2007 Jim, Have you got anything on Staff Nurse Nellie Spindler who is interred in Liyssenthoek Cemetery and who died on 21 August 1917? Where was the address of a CCS given as 42 Stationary Loop? The report gives its location in Abbeville. Regards Frank

Where was the address of a CCS given as 42 Stationary Loop? The report gives its location in Abbeville. Regards Frank Frank, She was posted to France and from May 1917 she was nursing at Stationary Hospital, Abbeville. She was fatally wounded at Brandhoek in the Ypres salient when her unit (44 Casualty Clearing Station – specialising in abdominal wounds) was shelled possibly due to its close proximity to a munitions dump next to the railway. At least, that is my understanding, Jim
Greyhound Posted 21 August , 2007 Share Posted 21 August , 2007 Sulhamstead Abbots - what do you need from there, Jim? I don't tend to go in that direction much, but it's not all that far away, so when I get a moment I will try and find the place! Might not be for a week or two though. Frank_East Posted 21 August , 2007 Share Posted 21 August , 2007 Jim, There is an article in the Yorkshire Post Magazine which gives the impression that Abbeville is on the Belgium -France border and her posting was 42 Stationary Hoop, a CCS.(Hoop not Loop as I posted).Otherwise it is a very interesting article on a nurse who is still remembered by her great niece who lives in Horbury near Wakefield. Apparently in addition to being remembered in the women's section at York Minster, Nellie is also remembered by a plaque placed in the chapel of St Jame's Hospital,Leeds by the Leeds City Board of Guardians which states Nellie was killed at Abbeville. On the same plaque is Elsie Pickard who died on 27 October 1918 and Isabella Renwick who died 3 November 1918.Both died from influenza whilst serving as nurses at the Leeds Township Infirmary. The report indicates Nellie served as a staff nurse at Whittington Military Hospital,Lichfield for two years before being posted to Abbeville in May 1918. Nellie's death was reported in the British Journal of Nursing on 8 September 1918 which mentions Abbeville as the place of death and that the hospital was shelled all day and that she died in the arms of Nurse Wood, another nurse who also like Nellie, originated from Wakefield. According to the article,Nellie's story is told by an interactive computer presentation in Flanders Fields Museum, Ypres. There are a number of phographs of Nellie and her nursing colleagues in the article. If you would wish to have the article I am happy to pass it on to you. Jim Strawbridge Posted 23 August , 2007 Author Share Posted 23 August , 2007 Frank Nellie Spindler is perhaps one of the three most remembered female casualties of WW1 (the other two being Edith Cavell and Elsie Inglis). I have wads of information on her from different sources some of which is contradictory. I think that what you have from the Yorkshire Post Magazine is very similar to what I have from the The Extra (Wakefield) but I can never have too much information so if you would send it along I shall be grateful (jimstrawbridge@coinsale.fsnet.co.uk). I am hoping that some kind soul will send me a photograph of the plaque in the Memorial Chapel at St. James’ University Hospital, Leeds sometime. Incidently she is entered in York Minster twice (in error) and she is not the only one. Having died in Sister (not nurse) Wood's arms is, I believe, an exageration. Sister Wood actually wrote to Nellie's parents about the episode and I have copies of her letter. Greyhound I am after the grave headstone for Dorothea M. Shepherd in St. Mary's churchyard, Sulhamstead Abbots. She was a sister with the TFNS but was invalided out due to mental problems from which she never recovered. So it is obviously a civilian grave. She was the daughter of the rector there so may have gained a plaque inside the church. I also need her name off the Sulhamstead Bannister war memorial which must be nearby. Sorry that I haven't got a grave plot number but I think that the churchyard will be of modest size only.
Roger Thompson Posted 23 August , 2007 Share Posted 23 August , 2007 Hi there Jim, As I work about 1/4 from Jimmy's(St James Hospital )I will see what I can do for you over the next few days, the ground keeper at Sharlston Cemetery as now marked the position of the grave for me so I will be popping along on Saturday Am to take the photo's, then that just leaves Katie Chapman at Leeds University. Peter Bennett Posted 25 August , 2007 Share Posted 25 August , 2007 Hi there Jim, As I work about 1/4 from Jimmy's(St James Hospital )I will see what I can do for you over the next few days, the ground keeper at Sharlston Cemetery as now marked the position of the grave for me so I will be popping along on Saturday Am to take the photo's, then that just leaves Katie Chapman at Leeds University. Cheers Roger. Hi Roger, I hope that the following will help you locate the actual plot of Katie Chapman's Grave. It had been my intention to follow up the details but work commitments have been prohibitive. The cemetery is now known as St. George's Fields. and is part of the north or the campus. You can see it in this plan: http://tldynamic.leeds.ac.uk/campusmap/index.asp The area was grassed over in 1968, and only the more ornate headstones survived, so it is unlikely you will find the grave itself, although we have a plan of where they were. If you want to visit Special Collections to look at the cemetery records, you will need to email or phone in advance, and bring some identification with you. If you are not able to visit, I can find the basic information we have on Katie Chapman for you. Please let me know if you would like this.
