I was looking for a photograph of the grave of Sarah Earnshaw, VAD, who died 22nd February 1919, aged 56. This has now been obtained.

I'll look for it anyway, my grandparents are buried in that churchyard so I visit on a fairly regular basis.

You will probably have difficulty in finding it.  To help, it is grave 1527, section XIX, All Hallows churchyard. The marker is a in a row of kerbstones.

Thanks. Do you have much information about her? There's a Facebook group for Kirkburton that might be able to help. I do know that's she's listed on the VAD memorial at Kirkburton Library: https://mindlabs.media/ww1-the-silence-of-the-guns

Jim, I was walking round Grimsby Scartho Road Cemetery the other day and noticed this grave.

As there is no mention of whether she died whilst serving, the epitaph could possibly mean she was Nursing, but dont quote me.

Just the fact that she was away from home during the War could mean she was serving, or could have just been a Servant etc. Was there a War Hospital in Bedford?

The date is obviously within the War years

According to the probate record she died at Shenstone Lodge in Bedford:

I  cannot see that she died serving her country or through the causes of the War.

Yes I agree now. It looks like she was in domestic service at the Lodge, working for a Military family.

For a nineteen year old in domestic service the estate at £1207 was quite a considerable sum in those days.

Yes but back in 1918,  her family lived on Bargate in Grimsby. For anyone to live on Bargate at that time must have been very wealthy as the houses are MASSIVE, many of which are still standing. Also the grave has that huge memorial on it. Not only does it have that big base, there is also an 8ft carved angel atop. Not something affordable to the common Johnny in Grimsby.

Which makes me think that she was either a friend of the Bedford family or a ladies companion (rather than a domestic servant). Family trees do not show a family relationship.

Ive just noticed one little fact on the post above, the fact that her father was a Trawler owner. He would have been a wealthy man. Massive houses on Bargate, Welholme Road and Park View, all in one area of town, were all built on money from the fishing industry.

Ive just found her fathers Probate listing. He died in 1948 and left just over £7500. A pretty penny back then.

Im interested now. I might nip into the library to see if there is mention of her in the local papers of the time.

I've just had a email from the CWGC. Apparently they are now allowed to erect headstones in Camberwell old cemetery. There are 2 woman who will have headstones made Edith Olive Williams WRAF and Bertha Vinter territorial force nursing service.

Hi Jim

Angmering, Sussex is just up the road from me, so if you still need the one from there I can look for you.

Thank you, Barbara.  ANGMERING - Janet Dixon Clare BALL, VAD, died December 1916. According to a newspaper report in a local newspaper she was buried on the 2nd January 1917 in Angmering. Amgmering, according to Wikipedia, is a large village but I am hoping that it only has one cemetery and that the graves are laid out in some sort of date order making the grave easy to find.           Good hunting.

I see the CWGC are asking for relatives for Eliza Willis in Burngreave cemetery. Can't be long now before they put a headstone up for her. I'll keep an eye on it.
