temptage Posted 31 August , 2021 Share Posted 31 August , 2021 Jim, I was walking round Grimsby Scartho Road Cemetery the other day and noticed this grave. As there is no mention of whether she died whilst serving, the epitaph could possibly mean she was Nursing, but dont quote me. Just the fact that she was away from home during the War could mean she was serving, or could have just been a Servant etc. Was there a War Hospital in Bedford? The date is obviously within the War years

Jim Strawbridge Posted 1 September , 2021 Author Share Posted 1 September , 2021 For a nineteen year old in domestic service the estate at £1207 was quite a considerable sum in those days.

Yes but back in 1918, her family lived on Bargate in Grimsby. For anyone to live on Bargate at that time must have been very wealthy as the houses are MASSIVE, many of which are still standing. Also the grave has that huge memorial on it. Not only does it have that big base, there is also an 8ft carved angel atop. Not something affordable to the common Johnny in Grimsby. Jim Strawbridge Posted 1 September , 2021 Author Share Posted 1 September , 2021 Which makes me think that she was either a friend of the Bedford family or a ladies companion (rather than a domestic servant). Family trees do not show a family relationship.

He would have been a wealthy man. Massive houses on Bargate, Welholme Road and Park View, all in one area of town, were all built on money from the fishing industry. Ive just found her fathers Probate listing. He died in 1948 and left just over £7500. A pretty penny back then. Im interested now. I might nip into the library to see if there is mention of her in the local papers of the time.

Barbara Thank you, Barbara. ANGMERING - Janet Dixon Clare BALL, VAD, died December 1916. According to a newspaper report in a local newspaper she was buried on the 2nd January 1917 in Angmering. Amgmering, according to Wikipedia, is a large village but I am hoping that it only has one cemetery and that the graves are laid out in some sort of date order making the grave easy to find. Good hunting.
