I will try to get better photos of the headstone and Memorial. I am in contact with someone who knows the Dorrien-Smith family, so they are going to ask questions. Might even get a photo of her!

I have just come across this post so you may weell have all these details already.

Braintree people killed by Zeppelin L 14.

Bomb dropped on 19 Coronation Avenue killed Mrs Ann Herbert while her daughter and children survived.
Next doors chimney stack fell killing  Alfred Dennington aged 31 years, his wife, Annie, aged 32 years and Ella Maud Hammond (niece), aged 3 years & 6 months

Buried together Black Notley Churchyard.

Not sure where Ann Herbert was buried. I have no notes on that.

Her name was Cicely Frances Dorrien-Smith, not Smith-Dorrien-Smith. This has come about because some of her details list her as Smith-Dorrien but her family were, and still are, Dorrien-Smith. They own the majority of Tresco, and still live there now. Cicely's father built the Church in the 1870's.

According to Wikipedia, Cicely's father changed his name in 1872 by Royal Licence from Thomas Algernon Smith-Dorrien to Thomas Algernon Smith-Dorrien-Smith.

I believe that Mrs Ann Herbert was born as Ann Allen in Sudbury but if you know different I should be pleased to know. Annie Dennington was born Annie Hammond and married Alfred Dennington in 1913. I have failed to find her in any of the three censuses following her birth (1891, 1901 and 1911).

Sadly I only found a few notes.

Laptop death has removed many and I am still searching for notes.

If I find anything I will post.

Blackburn Cemetery - Isabella COTTON, VAD, died 21/11/18 and buried in plot 3348, row E, section CE. Photograph of headstone required.

Found the grave (it's actually 3338), unfortunately it's seen better days. I gather it would once have stood as a column.

Hi

Who is the Walsall one ?

Graeme

Gertrude BYTHEWAY, V.A.D., died 31st December 1917. Her name is on a memorial in Walsall Council House commemorating employees who died. A memorial tablet in her memory was placed in the Palfrey School, Walsall where Gertrude and her sister were teachers.

Mary Julia SLATER, civilian, died 20th February 1916, aged 55, killed in a zeppelin raid. A memorial to her stands on the first floor landing of the Council House, paid for by the Walsall Children’s Country Holiday Home Trust.

Elizabeth STREET, civilian, died 10th Februery 1916. She is buried in an unmarked grave in Ryecroft Cemetery, plot 35.5.179. A photograph of the grave plot required.

I see another nurse was accepted for commemoration yesterday. Elizabeth Fraser MacDonald died of pneumonia 10 October 1918 and buried in Kingussie. May she rest in peace.

Jim,

I fancy a day out. Who do you need in Bramley, Brookwood, Farnham and Sunninghill (all in Surrey)? I'll do one of them.

BRAMLEY  -  Emma Dorothy EDE, VAD, died 16th August 1915, aged 21, and is buried in Holy Trinity churchyard (sorry, I do not know the plot number).

BROOKWOOD  -  Evelyn Gladys BROWN, VAD, died 4th May 1916, aged 28. The CWGC accepted her for commemoration in 1917 and, by now, her name should be added to panel 11 of the Brookwood 1914 - 18 Memorial. This also goes for Gertrude Mary GILTINAN, VAD, died 19th November 1918, aged 29, also CWGC commemorated in 1917 and her name should be on the memorial. Possibly also May GRANT, QAIMNS, died 2nd November 1918, aged 41 as the CWGC had not found confirmation of her grave in Duthil, Inverness-shire. Possibly also K. Christine JAY, QAIMNS, died 12th August 1916, aged 37. Also Lady Sarah Anne KING, VAD, who died 2nd April 1918 aged 55. Commemorated by the CWGC in 1918 and hopefully her name now added to the Brookwood 1914 1918 Memorial. The name of Trinnette TAYLOR, WRNS, is said to be on the Brookwood 1914 1918 Memorial.

Also Marjory Eva May EDWARDS, VAD, died 4th January 1918, aged 26, who is buried in grave 180322, plot I, Brookwood Cemetery. Photo of grave marker required.

Also Jessie Sophia LUDLOW, died 16th February 1918, aged 37, and buried in grave 180593, row Q, Brookwood Cemetery.

May Margaret STEVENSON, WAAC, died 5th February 1922, aged 47. She is buried in Brookwood Cemetery (sorry, plot number unknown to me). She was laid to rest in her mother's grave (Margaret Jane Stevenson).

- as an aside, I am told that Brookwood is a private cemetery and access and photography is not encouraged by the owners.

FARNHAM - Florence HAWKES, died 15th December 1917, aged 22. She is buried in plot 2084, row 4, plot D, Upper Hale Cemetery, Farnham. Also Beatrice Lucy PARRATT, WRAF, died 12th August 1919, aged 24, and is buried in plot L.10/634, Farnham Civil Cemetery.

SUNNINGHILL - Helen Maud PEEL, VAD, died 13th December 1917, aged 22. Her name is said to be on a memorial in the Sunninghill Comrades Club, Bagshot Road, Sunninghill.

Good hunting.

I have visited Bramley, but despite some welcome local advice, failed to find Emma Ede's grave. I now know that she is in the detached cemetery, not the churchyard. I also know the plot number (Row 24, 1H and 2H - probably other family members). I used the War Grave plot numbers for reference, but could find no sign. The cemetery has no map, is rather dilapidated and overgrown, there are few legible stones, many mossy kerbs, empty spaces and brambles. So, yet to be discovered.

Acknown

Addition: She was the village doctor's daughter. Could you advise which hospital she worked in?

Thank you for looking and the extra information as to where she is. She served at Thorncombe Military Hospital in Bramley.

Jim I've seen that the CWGC are producing another headstone for a woman killed in WW1 https://www.cwgc.org/our-work/news/appeal-for-relatives-30-october-2020/

Hilda MacLean is one of mine. I have a photograph of the current marker which, to me, seems to be in good nick save that it is one of those which zealous churchyard staff chose to lie on the grave for H & S reasons. I must make a diary note to seek out a photograph of the new headstone once the CWGC people have had a chance to make and instal it.

Interesting in that it is not a CWGC headstone but made in the same style as one. Agnes Sweeney died outside of the CWGC commemoration dates and it looks like the family wanted to recognise her WW1 service. It may be that they also thought that her death was due to it. I see that the Gravestone Photographic Resource seem to have earmarked it as an official war grave.
