Does anyone have access to "Soldiers Died in the Great War 1914-19"?

I am trying to trace my family history and cannot find date of birth/place of birth details for:

Ernest Henry TOONE, Rifleman, London Regiment (The Rangers) 1st/12th Bn. Service No 2046.

I have checked CWGC site and gave them some missing information (ie) father, wife, daughter etc. The site does not list his age.

If anyone has access to either the books or CD I would be most grateful if they could look up Ernest TOONE.

I did manage to take my elderly mother to the Menin Gate to witness the Last Post - a most moving experience - her rembering the father she never met and me the grandfather - tears all round!

Ron,

There are Nine possibilities on the 1901 Census.

Try the link below but it looks like ernest Toone of Leatherhead could be your man. He was a Garden Labourer at the time and was aged 18 in 1901, making him 33 at the time of his death.

1901 Census

Dear Paul,

I have a marriage certificate for Ernest TOONE dated Dec 1914. His age is given as 21 - we suspect that he may have been economic with the truth regarding his age. By stating he was 21 he did not require consent for marriage. I have looked at the 1901 census in the past but have not been able to tie up what data I have against that listed in the census. I know Ernets's father was called Edward.

I will revisit the 1901 data again now that I have a place of birth.

Many thanks for your help.

Regards

Ron

This isn't the right one, the head of this household is William Toone

I'm not saying this is the right one, but the only Ernest Toon, Toone or Tune living with an Edward in 1901 is the one living in Sutton In Ashfield, Notts. He was born in Skegby.

Do you know what his father's occupation was?

As the person enetering the index would have been struggling to read a microfiche of sometimes very poorly hand written you made need to be a bit creative with the name when searching the Census index. e.g. I was looking JUNIPER and eventually foiund the entry entered as JUMPER...

You could try TOUN, TOOM etc.

Ernest's Father Edward's occupation was given as Housepainter - Journeyman. This information is on Ernest's marriage certificate dated 16 Dec 1914. Edward was listed as deceased on the same document.

Many thanks for your help Tom.

If Ernest's age is correct on his marriage certificate he wasn't born until circa 1893.

His father - Edward was listed as deceased in 1914 on the same cocument. I will try to follow up all the leads that have been given. The fact that he was listed as born Teddington is helpful.
