Guest Ian Topham Posted 1 August , 2003 Share Posted 1 August , 2003 To keep a machine gun in operation and to carry around and position the equipment would naturally require man power What was the usual make-up of a Heavy Mchine Gun Squad / Crew ( Vickers etc )? Thanks Ian
Guest Ian Bowbrick Posted 1 August , 2003 Share Posted 1 August , 2003 Vickers Gun team was 6. No 1 fired the gun and carried the tripod. No 2 carried the gun and fed the ammunition. The other four carried ammunition, one acted as a range finder. A useful book to read is 'With a Machine Gun to Cambrai' by George Coppard. Stuart Lawton Posted 1 August , 2003 Share Posted 1 August , 2003 Would the members of the team rotate in their roles or could you be stuck carrying ammo for the duration ?
Guest stevebec Posted 1 August , 2003 Share Posted 1 August , 2003 No , in some MG sections No 1 on the gun was either a L/Cpl or expirenced senior man. That said a good crew would train all men in the section to do all jobs, as the chances of becoming a casulty in battle was a forgone concussion.
