Today I was surprised by this enchanted and cared for war cemetery of 99 dead in the deep woods of Harz mountain range near Oderbrück

Each village, town and city and Germany honors its dead from both WW's in special cemetery sections which are always beautifully cared for. Today I visited the town of Wernigerode, Harz mountains and found this WW1 section

egbert!

You visited Wernigerode? I have family from there! Do you happen to know any contacts for the cemeteries over there?

I had family there too and visited the cemetery, inquiring at the administration for a particular grave I am interested in. Their tel no is +49-(0)394-3632419.

What a pity you had not responded earlier, as I had been there again yesterday ( for Wernigerode, see also this photo)

Ah, well. I don't know if it would have been any good as I do not know who may be buried there. If you could also give me the name of the cemetery that would be of help as well. I also wonder if there is a Jewish cemetery there...if there is, then my people may be buried in it. I hope to go to Germany one day in the not too distant future and Wernigerode is on my list.

Thanks, and fantastic photos, by the way.

Hi Egbert,

I like to complete your Harz mountains episode with the memorial of Jägerbataillon 10 in Goslar.

Today I walked in the Black Forest near Gaggenau and surprisingly in a remote place I found this marvel and memorial stone right below castle ruine Ebersteinberg, dedicated to the fallen heroes of Reserve Feldartillerie Regiment 52

Fritz great picture. Forbach is situated in the Valley of the Murg, Black Forest. 1914 a forgotten place with small villages of only some few hundred population each.

What is amazing is the tremendous loss of life ratio from such villages. A few hundred inhabitants had to mourn so many sons, brothers, fathers, grandfathers and uncles. It surely changed the life of the surviving NOK.

I just hiked near the village next to Forbach, also in the Valley of the Murg. Langenbrand it is called. People had a hard living in these remote valleys and made some income from lumber industry. The following memorial was donated and erected 1922 by the boss of the local lumber factory, probably in memory of men who used to work for his business pre war. Many many names are etched into the limestone plaques.

This picture shows the hill side memorial coming up at the very right edge of the image , above the messenger dog

An architectural jewel, right now sadly in desolate not well cared state. It comprises of a oak entrance door, sided by two plaques with the names of the fallen. Below the plaques are 2 nicely carved wells. Left and right stone benches for the NOK to remember with a stunning view into the valley and upon the former lumber factory

From the top of the memorial and looking east along the gravel path I discover the yellow hilltop chapel in some 200 meters distance with the next surprise

Another proof of the heavy losses from these remote villages (remember this memorial is only some 200 m from the previous one)

Thanks S-S

Some 2 km downstream the Valley of the Murg is the next war memorial. Weisenbach, a small village is home of this massive monument with, again, heavy losses remembered on the plaques.
