BMoorhouse Posted 31 July , 2003 Share Posted 31 July , 2003 Does anyone know of any good account(s) of the French contribution to the Somme offensive? Preferably in English, or failing that either French/German? Thanks Brendon Moorhouse.
Chris_Baker Posted 31 July , 2003 Share Posted 31 July , 2003 Although it covers the entire war rather than the Somme in detail, I strongly recommend "Paths of Glory" by Anthony Clayton. Published recently by Cassell, and in the shops now. Probably the first major work in English about the French Army.
Paul Reed Posted 31 July , 2003 Share Posted 31 July , 2003 Very little on this, even in French, aside from the French official history and unit histories. There is a chap in Maurepas who has been working on a book about the fighting there for some time, but this is far from complete. You might want to have a look at the bookshop in the Historial in Peronne, next time you are on the Somme, as they have most French books on WW1 that are in print. Clayton's book is welcome, but must say I was a little disappointed with it. It has received a mixed reception in academic circles, but anything is better than nothing! paul guthrie Posted 31 July , 2003 Share Posted 31 July , 2003 There is some discussion of their role in this battle in Gary Sheffield's The Somme, new book.
