roger Posted 15 September , 2005 Share Posted 15 September , 2005 One of the memorials I am researching is in the old Grammar school in Bedale North Yorkshire. It lists ten names of ex pupils who lost their lives in the Great War. No rank, regiment or date of death is given so you can imagine it’s causing a few problems. I’ve so far managed to identify six of the men named. If anyone can help with the others it would be much appreciated. One of the names is H Whitelock. The closest I can find on CWGC site is, WHITELOCK, RONALD AMBROSE Nationality: New Zealand Rank: Rifleman Regiment: New Zealand Rifle Brigade Unit Text: 2nd Bn. 3rd Age: 20 Date of Death: 24/02/1918 Service No: 45626 Additional information: Son of the late Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Whitelock. Born at Aiskew, Bedale, Yorks, England. Cemetery: BROOKWOOD MILITARY CEMETER Everything fits apart from the initials. However this man, IF he was related to Ronald Ambrose, could be the man I’m looking for. WHITELOCK, VIVIAN HERBERT Nationality: New Zealand Rank: Private Regiment: Otago Regiment, N.Z.E.F. Unit Text: 2nd Bn. Date of Death: 15/09/1916 Service No: 24/1859 Cemetery: CATERPILLAR VALLEY (NEW ZEALAND) MEMORIAL IF he was known as Herbert rather than Vivian. Is there a New Zealand equivalent to SDGW that could shed some light on this? Thanks, Roger.
roger Posted 15 September , 2005 Author Share Posted 15 September , 2005 In addition the the previous information this is from the 1901 census. If Vivian Herbert was known as Herbert and it's the same person, he would have been around 31 at the time of his death. Guest Posted 8 April , 2015 Share Posted 8 April , 2015 Hello Roger. I feel weird replying to this as it was posted so long ago but it is of interest to me. Robert Ambrose and Vivian Herbert were my Great Uncles and from Bedale then came to NZ then went to WW!. Do you live in Bedale? Is there any way you could send me a photo of this memorial? Regards Nicky

NZ War Graves Posted 20 April , 2017 Share Posted 20 April , 2017 I trust that by now , you have established the information on the Whitelock brothers. Photographs of their memorials are on our website www.nzwargraves.org. Service records are online at Archway
