Hi,

I would be very grateful if anyone has access to the DLI War Diaries if they can tell me what happened to the 15th Bn on 09/09/1918.

I am trying to find as much detail as I can about:-

2nd Lieutenant (Temporary) Edwin John Brinkworth.

15th Battalion, Durham Light Infantry.

Died of wounds, 9/9/18.

Grateful Thanks to you all

Cheers

James

James,

The 15/DLI battalion held Epsom Copse, near Manancourt, on 9 September 1918. The battalion assembled for an attack from Genin Well Copse. Chapel Hill was captured despite obstinate resistance. A German counter-attack recovered a little of the ground lost but most of the battalion's gains were held. However, casualties included seven officers and two hundred and seventy other ranks.

I no longer have a copy of the battalion's war diary but I cannot recall mention of 2/Lieut Brinkworth by name. If you live within a reasonable distance of Durham City, a copy of the war diary for 1918 is held by Durham Record Office, County Hall - I deposited it with the DRO at the beginning of last year, along with copies of many other DLI war diaries.

If you do not have easy access to Durham or to the National Archives at Kew, where the original version of the war diary is held, you could always ring the DRO and ask them to do a search for you. I'm sure the cost would be modest. Their phone number is: 0191-383-3253 or ... 3474. E-Mail: record.office@durham.gov.uk.

David,

Thanks for your prompt reply.

Unfortunately getting to the PRO is not easy and as I based in Wiltshire Durham is a bit of a trek. Just have to try and find the info another way or put it on the things to do list :-)

Cheers

James
