Could you please look at both your war diary copies for the 11th Royal Fusiliers for a mention of 2nd Lt/Lt Jones.

Stu,

I do not how I missed your posting in September, but I think it was because I was abroad most of that month. My apologies.

You've probably moved on, but in any event I'll read the War Diaries again - which I'll do in the next day or so. This will not be a problem - the 11RF diary entries are full and interesting (unlike many unit Diaries), but it will take some time. However, having had a quick look through February and March 1918, the only 'Jones' I can see is a Capt E.L. Jones who was Acting Adjutant when he signed some Bn Preliminary Movement Orders. Probably not the person you're looking for.

I'll report back.

Barry

Dave,

I've looked through the entries but, not surprisingly, there is no mention of Pte Bennett. As you know, it is unusual for ORs to be named.

If your grandfather was still with the 1/6th Bn Sherwood Foresters on the 23rd April 1917 then he experienced another day of fairly intense action. The Bn attacked Fosse 3 de Lievin. Casualties 1 officer wounded and missing, 5 officers wounded, 21 ORs killed, 71 ORs wounded, and 3 ORs missing.

Unhappily, the detailed report of this action, that was an Appendix to the War Diary, has not survived.

Barry,

Could you tell me how one obtains War Diaries (or parts of) please. Is it by getting photo copies done at the PRO or local record office or is there some other source?

Thanks, Brian

War diaries are available at the Public Record Office in Kew, where you can photocopy or photograph them. In addition, many museums (Regimental, IWM, NAM) hold copies.

Brian,

Just to add to what Michael has said, if you cannot get to Kew, then you can search the National Archive Online Catalogue at http://catalogue.pro.gov.uk. Frankly, I find the Procat system a bit of an uphill struggle but it was relatively straightforward to find the 4th Suffolks' catalogue references (WO95/3927 for the period 12/1914 to 9/1915 and WO95/2427 for 11/1915 to 1/1918, the Pioneers are at WO95/2996 for the period 2/1918 to 7/1919).

If you deal direct with the PRO/NA either when visiting them or via their online catalogue, you’ll need to give them the Department Code (e.g. WO 95 for most War Diaries) and the item number, as well as the dates you wish to cover. The photocopy cost is per page plus P&P.

A personal visit to Kew is best, of course, because you can have a good rummage round the papers before ordering photocopies, but an alternative is to use the services of a researcher which I have done on many occasions to great effect (saved a lot of time and wasted effort on my part). There’s one not a million miles away at this web site’s sister site! There are others, too.

I also suggest you contact the unit’s Regimental Museum. I have always found them helpful and very informative. If they have a copy of the War Diary you’re looking for, they may be able to answer some of your questions, and give you a guide as to the scope of the Diary.

Good hunting.

Barry,

By any chance is there a mention of J P Mayne in the 1/6 Sherwood Foresters?

Stu,

I have read through the Diary extracts that I have but cannot see any occurrences of 2nd Lt/Lt Jones. The only 'Jones' I can see is the E. L. Jones who was a Captain A/Adjt in early 1918 who signed some of the diary entries and movement orders.

Let me know if you need any other lookups.

Hi Barry

Realise it is not common for OR's to be mentioned but can you have a look through the 7th Northamptons piece you have for any mention of 15772 F E Adkin, could be a Sgt by then, thanks.

Paul,

Sorry for the delay in replying - I've been away. Unhappily, as you suspected, there is no trace of Adkin (or approximations thereof) in the War Diary.

Hi

I am trying to gather info relating to the activities of 11Bn Royal Fusiliers on 13 July 1917. My great grandfather, Pte G W Jacob 51448 was killed on this day but I have no idea of the circumstances. I don't expect there to be any individual mention in the diary, but any info relating to the activties and location of the battalion on this day would be much appreciated.

With thanks for your time

As mentioned above, war diaries are available from the National Archives (NA). They are part of the WO (war office) series of documents archived there. The NA catalogue is available online - try the previously mentioned links. If you post up your relatives details in 'Soldiers', we'll no doubt do our best to help you.
