Remembered Today:

16th Yorks & Lancs

Ivor Lee

Recommended Posts

According to officval sources the primary location for the 16th (Transport Workers) Battalion Yorks & Lancs was:

Initially in 1916 Durham

April 1917 Barnard Castle

September 1917 Durham

January 1918 Catterick

October 1918 Barnard Castle

Clearly this battalion was being used either on the canals or railways but which?

Not being too good on knowledge about this area of England would I be right in the following assumptions?

Catterick - wih its army connection I would suspect railway loading/unloading?

Durham - canals?

Barnard Castle - help please!

Any local experts who can fill in the picture?

Many thanks

Ivor

Ivor,

This is my home area (roughly) and there are no canals in the areas you mention.

Darlington however is the home of the railway and pretty central to the places you mention so I would guess that this is the work they were involved with.

Bob.

Ivor, just turned up this portrait of Lt-Col C.H.Hill, c/o 16th Y&L, taken in February 1919, amongst my collection. I have mislaid my research on him, but seem to remember he had an interesting career with former service in the RND and also got an OBE(Mil)? You might know more?
