In numerous WW1 photographs I have seen soldiers wearing " Lanyards "

Can anyone explain what practical pupose ( apart from decoration ) this uniform embellishment servs?

I have also seen them worn on both shoulders, ( perhaps the photo's have been reversed ), which is correct Left or Right?

It's a little confusing

Many thanks

Cheers

Ian

For an officer or NCO lanyard will often be attached to a whistle, for an OR often a clasp knife

Which shoulder, right or left, is unit preference

Nowadays lanyards are worn as unit embellishments and rarely attached to anything. As far as I know only the white lanyard of the RA was worn as an embellishment at this time.

An example of a lanyard in use, for those who haven't seen one!

As worn by my great uncle 6946 Pte Edward Swain, 12th Royal Fusiliers.
