alanh Posted 27 November , 2002 Share Posted 27 November , 2002 I have found a listing in the London Gazette 1 Jan 1919 for My grandfathers elder brother 2nd Lieut (T/ Capt) Thomas Cooper, General List awarded MBE, but without citatation according to his record he served with the 6 Somerset LI . Is there anyway of finding out what the MBE was awarded for. Alan
Paul Reed Posted 27 November , 2002 Share Posted 27 November , 2002 Being in a New Years honours list probably means it wasn't for anything specific; it was probably for a long period of consistant good service. Remember the MBE is not a gallantry award, and in my experience was often given out to officers who were good at a specific job; quarter-masters, transport officers, etc. As far as I am aware there are no surviving recommendations for these medals at the PRO, although there might be something about it in his service file.
