A local church in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary has a First World War Memorial with a George Doyle of the South African Constabulary on it. He isn't listed on the CWGC site. Anybody any ideas on where he might be found?

Mick,

Only one George Doyle with an Irish link on Soldiers Died CD =

Private George Doyle of the Labour Corps

Born - Templemore

Enlisted - Londonderry

Died of Wounds August 26th 1918.

Formerly served with the Royal Irish Regiment.

Don't know if this is your man.

Bob.

It is possible that it is the George Doyle who was in the Labour Corps.

George Doyle is shown as being in 907 Garrison Guard Company. We know that men from Companies like this one were used as Guards at Military Prisons.

So he may have been assigned to guard South African military prisoners.

Perhaps someone on the list knows where South African military prison was located?

The South African Heritage Resources Agency has a database of all those who died as the result of military action on South African soil.
