Hello all.

Im researching my grandfathers involvement in the war in Mesopotamia.

He was from Swansea South Wales and a volunteer in 1914. His name was John Ladd and he was 19 when he joined up.

What little we can recall from our memories as a family is that he was a horseman as he originaly came from the Cardiganshire countryside. After he enlisted he spent some time in the London area training soldiers to ride and handle horses we dont know the regiment he served in im afraid.

He later went to Mesopotamia and spent the duration of the war there.

He was reported missing to his family during this time so it was a graet suprise for all when he returned home at the end of the war.

A story i remember him recalling to me as a child was of his regiment a horse artillary regiment i beleive they were to enter a town and he recalled the Turks had abandoned it but before leaving they had crucified some British prisoners of war to telegraph poles at the entrance to the town.

He also spoke with great admiration of the Gurkas he fought alongside.

Any information which could help me paint a fuller picture of my grandfathers war would be very gratefully received.

Yours sincerly. Peter Lewis.
