Remembered Today:

Palestine Photographic Collection

Came across an interesting photographic collection whilst searching for something else. This is the collection of the American Colony (Jerusalem) Photo Department held by the US Library of Congress.

The link to the main photographic collection search page is:

http://lcweb2.loc.gov/pp/pphome.html

I entered “Australian light horse” into the search box – this brought up an image of the ALH encampment at Mt Scopus following the battle of Tell el-Ful. Clicking on the thumbnail brings up a number of large-scale versions of the image.

If one clicks on the ‘Creator’ link further down the page this brings up the whole collection of the American Colony (Jerusalem) Photo Department (4661 images). Apart from the plethora of bible-based images, items of interest to this forum include the German Baghdad railway construction, Australian Army Engineers on the railways 1918, Allenby, Turkish troops in Palestine, the surrender of Jerusalem in 1917, Kaiser Bill’s state visit of 1898, as well as a number of images of the British occupation forces in 1920 attempting to maintain order.

I hope this is a new resource for the group, otherwise apologies for stating the obvious.

An easier link to the above collection is:

http://lcweb2.loc.gov/pp/matpcquery.html

Working through the collection has revealed photographs of T. E. Lawrence and Churchill in Palestine in 1921 as well as Turkish aircraft and cemetery sites. Inserting battlefield into the search box brings up some interesting images.
