I do not know the answer to your question, but if I am allowed a guess I would guess that Richard Wye with his five digit number was a 1914/15 new army volunteer and J Hooper a 1916 conscript. There are so many variables I can only make a guess, hopefully somebody can be a bit more definite. Tony.

HOOPER, J Lance Corporal 231453 25/10/1918 20 London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers) United Kingdom A. 1. LESDAIN COMMUNAL

WYE, RICHARD GEORGE Private 43144 10/08/1917 0 Royal Fusiliers United Kingdom Panel 6 and 8. YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL

I always thought that your service No. was just issued in sequence I didn't realise that it actually showed wether you were a regular or conscript or even when you probably joined up Thanks for the info

It is just a first guess, if they were Holmfirth men and I had no other information I would assume the above until more information proved it one way or the other. There are so many variables it is important to keep an open mind.

Tony.

Certainly in RWF there was no distinction between pre-war regulars, after Aug 4th 1914 enlistments, and 1916 onwards conscripts. Indeed, all were regarded as "regulars", albeit with different terms of engagement. All were numbered in one series. The only exceptions were TF [a series for each BATTALION] and SR.
