Hi

I've come across some soldiers from the Northumberland Fusiliers that have numbers starting 22/

Does anyone know what the reason for this start to the service number means - if anything?

Indicates Members of the original 22nd [service] Battalion

[3rd Tyneside Scottish]

Raised @ Newcastle By the Lord Mayor & City;on 5th November 1914.

By June 1915 part of 102nd Bde;34 Division.

Adopted by the War office 15th August 1915,

To France January 1916.

Reduced to Cadre 17th May 1918,Returning to UK with 16th Divn;

18th June 1918.Absorbed the newly formed 38th Bn; @ Margate & rejoined the 16th Dvn @ Aldershot,in 48th Brigade.

In July 1918 returned to France,Ending the War @ Tournai Belgium [11.11.18]
