Lt (Major) Eric CREWDSON

Seeking any information including photos of Eric Crewdson. I have a copy of his MIC (WO/372/5) and he enlisted on 24 Aug 1915. He was the officer who sent my grandmother a letter confirming her husband, Sapper WE Beckett was hit by a shell on 1st Oct 1917 at the Butte, Polygon Wood.

There are 189 Crewdsons on the 1901 Census and none look promising enough to part with money. <_<

I live in hope

Major E Crewdson served as an observer with No 98 Sqn RAF; it wasn't unknown for Captains and Majors to transfer to the RFC and RAF and to keep their rank although performing what were normally a subaltern's duties .

On 1 November 1918 Maj Crewdson and his pilot, 2Lt H W Whitlock, took off at 1130 in DH 9 D1109 on a bombing raid, their radiator was damaged during combat with enemy aircraft over Bouvignies with the result that the engine seized and they were forced to land. The aircraft was damaged, but both airmen were unhurt.

I hope this helps you.

Steve,

thats brilliant! I saw the Erie and wondered whether to spend a quid or three. Fancy him coming from Kendal, just up the road from where I come from :D

Probably explains why he was an officer, having a father who was a banker and a good education to boot.

Thanks for that

If that's Uppingham School, then it's been about since the 1500s.

Intrigued about the patient/Sanatorium part, though...

Steve,

I agree with your observations. I wonder if he had TB or something similar as a child.

I know this letter was written from near Ypres but his handwriting seems a bit haphazard and he replied on the same letter which is still in the family's possession. He also signs off as a Major as well.

Thanks to everyone who has contibuted so far.

I had thought of possibly contacting any living descendants to help fill in the picture. He certainly, whilst in the RE, was very meticulous in filling in the war diaries for the 95th FC, which is why I know where my grandfather was shelled.

Someone has listed Eric Crewdson on GenesReunited as an ancestor - would you like me to contact him on your behalf?

I cannot tell how closely related he is from the initial entries...

Up to approx 5 years ago John his wife and son were living at an address in Windermere

Someone has prepared and posted a detailed family tree for the family. I think it may be the husband of Peter Eric Fyers Crewdson's daughter Susan Mary Crewdson. He has left an email address.

If you are interested email me and I'll send the details.

Excellent to find a photograph of Major Crewdson at his wedding.

Posted

Myrtle,

I agree. I am now hoping for one of him in uniform to sit next of the one I have of my grandparents wedding photo taken in 1916.

Jim,

Oh, to be a fly on the wall when Dick Crewdson reads my email :P

I assume the engineer in this article may be "our" Eric Crewdson. Looks like he put his Royal Engineers experience to good use (or alternatively that's why he was in the RE)

By the way, the name of the person posting on GenesReunited is Stephen, so probably not of the same branch as Dick Crewdson.
