jamie 1978 Posted 14 June , 2005 Posted 14 June , 2005 Would members of the volunteer force have been living in the area that the regiment was from. As such would a member of the Gloucester Volunteer Force been living in Gloubcestershire. Jamie
HERITAGE PLUS Posted 14 June , 2005 Posted 14 June , 2005 In the main yes. However it is possible that a man living in a neighbouring county near to the county border could have joined a Gloucester unit as it was nearer to his home than the nearest one in his own county. Have you a specific person in mind? Dave

Have you a specific person in mind? Dave <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Yes I have, The thing is I am a little confused as to when My grandfather joined the Army . With no record available I am trying to get as accurate date as possible. In August 1916 Alexander Tyrrell 4878 transferred from the 5th (res) Battallion of the Gloucesters to the RFC. At the top of the transfer form it says 'Transfer From The Regular Army'. Regular Army has been replaced with Territorial Force. Does this mean he would have needed to be living in or beside Gloucestershire? Jamie
HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 15 June , 2005 Posted 15 June , 2005 He would have probably been "Local" to a TF Battalion,if serving Pre 1914,& in the early stages of the War,as to attended Training sessions etc,he would have needed to have been able to get to the Training Centre, usually on Foot,Cycle,Wagon, etc;though trips in my area of 10~15 Miles were not unheard of. As the War Progressed it is less likely for an enlistee to actually live in the prescribed area, though not impossible. His Numbers on his Medal Index Card if available should give some indication as to his enlistment date There is an Alic Tyrell[age 4] of Bloxham Oxon in the 1901 Census, but 4 {Only 2 of which would be of an age to serve in WW1} Alexander Tyrrell, but none from the area near Gloucester,No Alex/Alexander Tyrell Listed for Gloucester Regt in MiCs,But there is an OBLI?? However if he transferred into the RFC before embarking O/S then that is not surprising,If the number 4878 you give is his Gloucestershire Regt {TF} Number I would suggest that he would have enlisted in late 1914[November~December],early 1915[January~March],from Comparison with Similar TF Battalions

He married in Jan 1915 in London. Possibly before he signed up? His mic doesnt exist. Only his transfer from the Gloucesters (4878) to the Rfc in Aug 1916. The OBLI you mention was killed in action -I have his card. I am just confused with why he found himself in a Gloucester Regiment when he would have needed to take some active part in training or the like? Jamie
HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 15 June , 2005 Posted 15 June , 2005 From his Number And guesstimated Enrolment Year{circa 1914/15} I would suggest that he had enlisted locally to Gloucester, for whatever reason, the attendance requirements would by then not really apply as he would probably have enlisted for the duration @ that time being embodied into the Battalion directly for service, often one discovers these strays from their place of Birth/Normal residence were Railway or Waterways {or similar} Employees and consequently were working miles from home when enlisting.

Stopping with a friend for a weekend I decided to go into the recruitment ofice there. A small coincidence? Jamie
