Are you planning one of your walking tours? Regards, Bob Are you the guide for the Tour of the 1915 Battlefields in september?
Paul Reed Posted 10 June , 2005 Author Share Posted 10 June , 2005 Are you planning one of your walking tours? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I am not personally doing any tours over that period; it will be a time to give something back to the battlefields and those who visit them, which is why I want to organise the exhibition I mentioned elsewhere. I have sent you a PM regarding your other question.

shaymen Posted 10 June , 2005 Share Posted 10 June , 2005 Voted No - simple reason - Can't be doing with all the crowds. Bit too touristy ( no offence to those that are going ) - will certainly be making a couple of trips next year but they will be before and after the July rush. Paul Johnson Posted 11 June , 2005 Share Posted 11 June , 2005 Hi Paul, Hope to be able to make it but have to confirms some dates first. (I had better hurry myself up!) Once I can confirm then I need to find accomodation, which could prove a little tricky having read some of the other posts onthe subject. Hope to see you there and, with any luck, be able to help out. Regards PAUL JOHNSON

Glyn <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Glyn I go across on a very regular basis, 2x a year, and generally do my own thing but without any remembrance except that of my own. 2006 is the 90th. I don't think ( I am sure!) that I will be around for the 100th. It is my only chance to really join in. I do not go in the summer because of the heat and, as you said the tourists, BUT 2006 is going to be very different for a lot of people, including me, even though I have no direct familial connection with the Somme. Probably I am being a bit sentimental but there it is. I will be there. Martin

Dragon Posted 13 June , 2005 Share Posted 13 June , 2005 Martin, I can asure you that if the past four or five years are anything to go by it wont be hot! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> It was extremely, uncomfortably, hot on July 1st 1996. Desmond7 Posted 13 June , 2005 Share Posted 13 June , 2005 For what will be my first time visit to the battlefield, hot and sunny will suit me just fine! It will also give me another 'link' to the morning of 1st July. Looking forward to the trip and hoping I can also visit many other Great War sites in future. I do realise that WW1 was a long conflict but I have to admit that this day does hold a fascination for me. Des
ypres1418 Posted 13 June , 2005 Share Posted 13 June , 2005 Gwyn I think that was the last one! 1996 was such a long time ago now I had forgotten it! Mandy
Peter Beckett Posted 14 June , 2005 Share Posted 14 June , 2005 Paul, I have voted yes as I missed going this year. I am hoping our great leader will be able to put together a proposed Pals tour as I want to meet as many pals as possible whilst holidaying in France, Holland and UK. andigger Posted 14 June , 2005 Share Posted 14 June , 2005 Thought I'd add this link to seeif anyone wanted to add more about the Royal Picardie. I am not sure if its booked up for next year, but for trips at other times other Pals advice is always helpful. Andy
Mark Hone Posted 14 June , 2005 Share Posted 14 June , 2005 It was also baking hot on the afternnon of 1st July 1986 when I attended the 70th anniversary service at Thiepval. I vividly recall a tough-looking French paratrooper keeling over in a cloud of chalk dust.
Admin Michelle Young Posted 21 June , 2005 Admin Share Posted 21 June , 2005 Voted probably not, I think the crowds will be too much, but I might change my mind nearer the time.
Guest wrinklyone Posted 23 June , 2005 Share Posted 23 June , 2005 Sorry, Paul. Understandable, I suppose, that the Somme is such a honeypot. If, like me, you guys are fed up with crowds, try the Aisne.
Paul Reed Posted 24 June , 2005 Author Share Posted 24 June , 2005 Thanks to all who have voted and replied. I just wanted to gauge an idea of how many people were actually going from this forum, that's all. I don't see it as compulsory, and understand people's comments even if I don't agree with them. I will be adding details of events etc to my website and updating people here as well, with links to the new website, when it goes live in the autumn. Mark Hone Posted 27 June , 2005 Share Posted 27 June , 2005 We have now recruited enough older pupils for our 'mini-Somme' tour over the 1st July weekend next year. The majority of them will be senior cadets and we should have our cadet force bugler in tow.
uncle bill Posted 28 June , 2005 Share Posted 28 June , 2005 I don't see the problem with the crowds when everyone shares a common interest or passion, maybe a good opportunity to put faces to names. Still reeling from the shock of seeing Paul ( baby face )Reed in the flesh.

If you're concerned with 'Remembering', isn't that best done quietly?
squirrel Posted 28 June , 2005 Share Posted 28 June , 2005 Will be going to the Loos commemorations in September so will have to watch the Euros. My dad's cousin is buried in Delville Wood Cemetery and I visited him last week for the first time. Don't think I would want it to be crowded next time I go to this or any of the other cemeteries that I try to visit once a year. I'll give July 1st a miss.
