Paul Reed Posted 8 June , 2005 Posted 8 June , 2005 As some of you know I am in the planning stages of organising a Battle of the Somme Exhibition over the 1st July weekend in 2006. There is still much to sort out, but it will be free to enter, there will be no commercial aspect to it (although it will be sponsered by a tour company so that it is free to the public), and I already have several local collectors and a couple of forum members who are going to display items, photos, maps etc from not just the British but French and German angle as well. If there is any forum member who is seriously interested in displaying any aspect of their collection who would like to participate then please let me know. I may also be in need of some 'marshalls' who would be prepared to be on hand over the weekend to help out. Once all the details are finalised I will post them on this part of the forum; as it is not a commercial venture in any way, I hope it won't break any advertising rules this forum has?
ypres1418 Posted 8 June , 2005 Posted 8 June , 2005 good luck with it Paul, i can help if you wish (to Marshall). as soon as i get the dates from Eric i'll let you know. mandy
Paul Reed Posted 8 June , 2005 Author Posted 8 June , 2005 It has also struck me - if Chris is prepared to print some advertising flyers for the forum, we can make sure there are some on display for people to take? I am aiming to have an 'information area' where people can pick up tourist info leaflets and any other related details.
Paul Reed Posted 8 June , 2005 Author Posted 8 June , 2005 good luck with it Paul, i can help if you wish (to Marshall). as soon as i get the dates from Eric i'll let you know. mandy <{POST_SNAPBACK}> That was quick! Thanks Mandy - I would appreciate it.
ypres1418 Posted 8 June , 2005 Posted 8 June , 2005 how will you do the marshalling, will you do time table for people to do say one hour at a time? over how many days will the exhibition be on? If you need a hand in co-ordinating this i'm happy to help, you know me i like co-ordinating (or is that ordering?!) people. Mandy
Paul Reed Posted 8 June , 2005 Author Posted 8 June , 2005 Mandy - I will just need a few people who are prepared to give up a few hours on one or more days just to keep an eye on things, help people out and answer questions.
ypres1418 Posted 8 June , 2005 Posted 8 June , 2005 np probs then paul, if i can't answer a question i'll use the reply i do at work i don't know but i know a man who does! look forward to helping you, mandy
burlington Posted 8 June , 2005 Posted 8 June , 2005 Paul I would like to help but as I am shepherding 3 others it would be impossible for me to get away. In any case I am the driver!! Sorry- if the situation changes I will certainly volunteer. Martin
Paul Reed Posted 8 June , 2005 Author Posted 8 June , 2005 Thanks Martin - people can help by simply turning up and visiting the exhibition; if no-one comes it will all be in vain!
ypres1418 Posted 8 June , 2005 Posted 8 June , 2005 I can't see no-one turning up Paul, an exhibition! you'll get loads of visitors, coach loads! Mandy, I know you will definately have four just from our little gang, and how many Pals and Palettes will be there? I don't think you need worry. M
CROONAERT Posted 9 June , 2005 Posted 9 June , 2005 Paul. What kind of items are you looking for to display? I'm intending to be over there for the 90th and, after a small commemmoration near Serre will probably be available for the remainder of the day on the 1st (mid-morning onwards) if I could be of any use to you. Dave.
uncle bill Posted 9 June , 2005 Posted 9 June , 2005 Paul I'd love to help out. I have a few interesting pieces for dispaly if you want, ie full size 1916 officer mannequin and so on. I also speak french if that helps. Email me if you are interested. lawrence Brown
Aaron Nelson Posted 9 June , 2005 Posted 9 June , 2005 Paul, Not to sure if this would be of interest to you. But I have put together the story of my Great great Uncle who was killed during the battle near Flers in mid September. I have a few photos of him and have written a transcript, its about 200 pages long. If this is the sort of thing you are after then I would be happy to sent to you. My great Uncle was part of the NZEF, so that gives another countries perpsective on it as well. cheers Aaron.
Paul Reed Posted 9 June , 2005 Author Posted 9 June , 2005 Thanks for all the responses - what I am looking for is not so much objects per se, but objects plus people who are prepared to come and display them, and talk about them to interested parties: if I liken the exhibitors to 'stall holders', then perhaps that explains it better. So if you have something or a whole collection that relates to WW1 and the Somme in particular, and are prepared to come along and display it, talk to people about it, etc then I would be pleased to hear from you.
LizM Posted 7 July , 2005 Posted 7 July , 2005 Hi Paul Jonathon is very keen to show some of his collection but, as it is a mixture of Somme and Salient wondered if this would be ok. Liz
