Remembered Today:

Officer's Mess!

I was reading the 1st Hants War Diary today at the PRO/NA together with a number of MIC and medal roles, etc and came across Lt A P Knocker (later Capt) who whilst leading his platoon against an enemy position at Nieppe in October 1914 fell into a cesspit in order to escape being hit by machine gun bullets. I can imagine what expletive he would have used at the time!

No doubt brought a certain amount of humerous relief to the platoon after the attack. Not a very nice cleaning job for some unlucky private I would imagine!

Unfortunately, Capt Knocker was not to survive the war and died in February 1915. He is buried in Ploegsteert Churchyard.

In remembrance of Capt Knocker and the other 'Stone Wallers' I looked at today.
